The hummingbird hawk moth.

This summer has been fantastic for insects and other wildlife in the garden, have seen loads more butterflies than usual.

Alas, it being a good year for insects means we're already seeing more wasps than usual. Wasps are more good than bad (despite the bad rep), but they are still a pain in the arse when trying to eat or just relax in peace!

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Fantastic find.

Did you manage to get any photos yourself or was it too fleeting a moment?

Wasps are an absolute necessity in the fight to keep aphid numbers down aren't they.

And they're no bother until about late July when they get made redundant, get bored, and go out looking for trouble.

I can't really get my head round the scale of that thing. Is it as big as a clenched fist ?

Ha. My standard response whenever we see an unidentifiable bird of prey is "I reckon it is a pterodactyl".

Agree about the wasps but they are defending our brassicas from caterpillars.

Miss Slave filmed it getting nectar from our phlox plant...speedy thing and a good size.

I was lucky enough to see a flock (dunno what the correct collective is) of about 40 hummingbird hawk moths once. Must have been just after hatching I guess?

As for wasps, I'm pleased to see them all over my plums at the moment!

I haven’t seen one yet this year. They probably get blown across Wales at 50 mph though.

Was buzzing inside ceiling lampshade around 9.30pm about a month ago. Unwittingly stepped on it when it dropped to the ground! Thought it was some kind of Maybug, but its body is smooth and shiny rather than hairy.

Oh right, shame, it's showing on mine but obviously recognises my laptop.

Basically looked like a £1 coin sized Maybug but unusually coloured - wide black and orange bands across body - black closest to head, then - orange - black - orange - black at tail, with long 'sting' like probe sticking out there (which has a name that I can't recall, found on Maybugs). Its surface is shiny & hard, lacquered appearance.
