They won’t own their new stadium

This was always going to happen with Peterborough under MacAnthony. He is a property developer first and foremost with an ‘interesting’ record particularly in the USA.

Hmmm, when did they complete that new stand? January 2023 seems very soon to want to be in a new ground given the way the last year has gone.

There is no doubting that he has run the club very well as a business.

As with the Oystons at Blackpool, there is something dislikeable about him and I suspect he will not be held up as a shining example forever.

Hmm...will be interesting to see if the profit from the sale of the current ground (which shouldn't be much, given that the club are trying to repurchase the ground from the local council! This does have a whiff of all the shenanigans at Northampton town.

Suspect they are buying the ground back at an agreed price and would make a nice profit when they sell it on to a builder.

Players they have sold on to bigger and better things surely? Although that may still only be the Championship.

They'll be a picture of Simon Clegg paying the best part of £2m for Paul Taylor. It'll probably be next to a Subway.

Depends on whether the local council have the foresight to apply an overage clause or a restrictive covenant to the deal.

In essence "We'll sell you the ground for £x, but should you obtain planning permission we will be entitled to x% of the increase in the value of the site." or "The land is only to be used as a sporting facility.".

I'm unsure about the nature of the deal for the new stadium etc., yes it's nothing like what we're used to in football, but you do see it in other sports. There are a number of teams, for example, that call the MEN Arena their home without being owners of it.

It also depends if it is the club, or it’s directors who are buy8ng the ground. Didn’t Peterborough originally own the ground and sell it to the council?

Surely the nature of the purchaser shouldn't make a difference?

If Peterborough City Council wish to either prevent development, or make sure they are adequately compensated if development subsequently takes place, then they can apply an overage clause/restrictive covenant regardless of who is buying the stadium/land.

Well we would be in the same situation no doubt if Evans had been successful in his bid to buy the land our ground stands on from IBC.

Our training ground already languishes in the accounts of some offshore Evans company I believe.

I think the land was originally owned by the council, who leased it to the football club. The club bought the land from the council in the 1950s & Posh owner Peter Boizot (of Pizza Express fame) acquired the ground when buying the ailing club in 1997, before selling it back to them in 2003. The council bought the ground back for £8m in 2010 & the club pay annual rent of £500k.
