Average and mediocre league 10:11 - Nov 28 with 597 viewsGlasgowBlue

Just looking at the League One live table and, other than Hull, our form over the past five games isn’t much different than any of the other top 8.

1. Hull- Won 4 Lost 1
2. Posh - Won 3 Lost 2
3. Lincoln - Won 2 Drawn 1 Lost 2
4. Portsmouth - Won 2 Drawn 2 Lost 1
5. Ipswich - Won 3 Lost 2
6. Fleetwood - Won 3 Drawn 1 Lost 1
7. Sunderland - Won 2 Drawn 2 Lost 1
8. Charlton - Won 3 Drawn 1 Lost 1

Looking at that only Hull have won more games than us over this period and we have won more games than Lincoln, Portsmouth and Sunderland. Whilst we have lost the same number if games as Posh and Lincoln.

Worryingly, the teams below us have lost less and have picked up a few draws, which suggests they are closing the gap.

What the above tells me is that we are no better and no worse than our so called promotion rivals. Despite looking absolutely awful in the last few games and with a manger who seems either unwilling or incapable of adapting the tactics to suit a game or a particular period in a game.

Are the top 8 all a bit of a muchness? Would a new manager make the difference to have us playing Hull City form? Or if left as we are, would the returning inured players be enough to get us back to in the automatic places, even with Lamber in charge?

My answer to question 1 is yes. We really aren’t any better than those around us. The current squad is top half league one standard. Noe better and no worse.

A new manager with the ability to make the required team choices and required changes in a game would certainly get us in the right direction.

Even if Lambert remains, having KVY, Bishop, Downes, Dozzell, Edwards and Nolan back in the team and match day squad would see us performing better than of late.

These may well be the questions Evans is weighing up since the defeat to Hull.

If he agrees with me on question 3 then he may conclude that we can still go up without him having to fork out a few quid on compensating Lambert and getting in a new man. My gut feeling is that’s how his mind will work.

Edit. Forgot to put Downes in the list. Had forgotten all about him.

If we do gain promotion under Lambert we will get hammered next season if he is still here.

It will make 2018/19's humiliations look like 00/01.

Maybe getting ahead of ourselves here but current squad has straight back down written all over it.

The issue with us is virtually every game we play seems to be borderline with us sailing close to the wind and the margins being so fine that one dubious refereeing decision, one chance missed or one defensive mistake costs us. The stats show that we don't create enough chances - that is a fundamental problem. You can't keep riding your luck, a promotion contender needs to be able to win games convincingly.

Would depend who remained and who was added to the squad. Keeping all the youngsters will be important. Less chance of thr older suspects remaining if we have a different manager but as you say looking too far ahead.

Today’s game will be strange as the words Bowyer used to describe Charlton’s performance at Burton described us perfectly.

Seems Bowyer felt they moved the ball too slowly and were sloppy in possession.

Scumbag Bowyer will probably have worked on that in training though. Lambert will send us out to do exactly the same thing again.

Going straight back down does come with the chance of resetting contracts etc. for salary cap though, and so is ultimately positive.

You will likely see the Championship/League One divide become much wider and so teams in theory will yo-yo more.

That's the last thing I'd be worrying about right now. Need to get out of this league. Then we need to become a zillion times smarter than we've been in the past dozen years but we'd just have to cross that bridge.

If we're talking about having Lambert here as a someone on a 'long term build'(assuming anyone still believes that's what he's doing here) then we have to look beyond the end of this season. Hoping to become a yo-yo club(ast best) isn't really building for the future.

I do get that, believe me, but it's really imperative we get out of L1 this season. The club needs a reset whatever happens but I'd rather it was a chat we were having up there than down here.
