Let's hope he's sacked because that could quite easily have escalated and ended with the innocent party retaliating. Whilst the copper is in the wrong, I would rather be looking at those who have made a law and/or who failed to train him properly on the new legislation. He obviously thinks he has the right to demand someone's details and can arrest them if they "no comment" him. Which begs the question how poor his training is over the current legislation? It also raises a question as to what pressure is being put on the police when they are now out questioning people for no reason other than they are outside of their homes. I know of similar actions in both Dedham and Hadleigh and it doesn't sit easy. But hey, it keeps Priti happy.

Shortly after moving to Norway, I was walking home late one night when an unmarked police car pulled up. They identified themselves as police officers and asked me what I was doing, where I had been etc. Being British, I basically suggested that it had fook all to do with them unless they suspected I was up to no good. They calmly informed me that in Norway, the police can stop whoever they like, demand ID and question that person. They kindly offered to drive me to the police station if I continued to be difficult.

Who knows but it would be incredibly surprising if standard police training didn't clarify that. Who is to say he isn't just stupid, ignorant or both? It's hardly difficult to get into the force is it.

Am not ordinarily one to defend a copper who gets it wrong, but he made a mistake. That was corrected by WMP and fair dos for them correcting it. I think sacking him, as suggested is ridiculous. He needs to understand the law, how it should be applied and job done. But he wasn't bullying the guy as such - he actually thought (wrongly) he had the right to act as he did. That's the core of the problem, his poor knowledge rather than poor application. That's my take on it. If I were him I'd be well p*ssed off being sent out to question people walking alone down the street who have shown no evidence of wrong doing. What a state we are in when we think that is a good use of police resources.

Although as the lad pointed out there were other people about so why target him? Also, calling him names isn't exactly professional. Going by his attitude, even from that short clip alone, it begs the question if he's the right material for a job that requires an element of patience and diplomacy.

If a copper doesn’t know the law he shouldn’t be a copper anymore. It’s the absolute basics. The fact it is yet another young black person getting harassed by Babylon is just salt for the meat. And he was bullying him without a doubt.

A mate of mine and I were were harrassed by 2 gun-wielding coppers on the Australian East Coast on an evening out. We had broken the State law by drinking whilst walking down the street, something that had been ok in the previous state. They stopped their car and gave us a mouth full, but we obliged, poured the drinks away and disposed of the cans. Not happy with that they followed us about for the following hour; whatever place we emerged from they were parked outside waiting, even crawling their car up the street as we walked, like a couple of kerb-crawling weirdos. We ask them the problem and one of them got out of the car and started trapping off threatening to arrest us, tapping his gun and all that nonsense over nothing. There are arrogant pricks who join the force all over the world just for that little sense of power it brings.

I guess if your starting point is "I am entitled to know this guys name" then when the lad refused to give it him - yeah, he gets gobby and throws him in the car. But the root cause of the problem wasn't that the copper was a knob, rather than he didn't know the law and what rights he has. Of course he may also be a knob, but that would hardly be a surprise / of someone in uniform.

I agree it came across as bullying. I have met quite a number with the same attitude over the years. Just w@nkers in a uniform. Not exclusive to just the police of course and yes to the disclaimer that plenty of our police are jolly good sorts and all that too.

Hey, we have brought in new laws that have changed something like 60 times in the past 10 months. A senior ex-chief copper (Durham) on QT made the point that he would normally train his whole force in 12 months over a new law. So to expect them to all get it right, all the time, is expecting a bit much. The bit that impresses me is how quickly WMP apologised. Makes a pleasant change from a police force trying to defend the indefensible. I would expect he'll get "advice" and will not repeat his fck up. The benefit of cameras helped too. 5 years ago it would have been a "he said/she said" and the lad would probably be looking at a charge for resisting arrest...

Yes and I am always aware when I'm moaning about the police that there's a decent chap who used to post on here a bit who's a copper. He's always seemed a nice fella and I wouldn't want him to think we're all police haters! It would be interesting to hear his take on these things though. [Post edited 29 Jan 2021 17:37]

I think it was around Byron Bay way, but it was some time ago now. We'd tried Brisbane but it was under water, ( a cyclone off the coast ffs, first one in almost 20 years), messed about on the Gold Coast for a few days, before then poodling down to Sydney afterwards.
