Say you had a teenager (18+) getting into urban exploration.

CV concerns aside, what would you be saying to them? Why?

Learn about structural integrity*, wear and carry safety/emergency gear, go in groups, know the law on trespass.

* Not just unsafe brickwork, but also things like the dangers of gas in sewers.

Buy a high viz jacket with 'surveyor' written on the back, and a hard hat.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

plus an asbestos awareness course. and learn to spot the symptoms of weil's disease.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

To add to what Guthers said, and knowing people who do this sort of thing, makes he's doing it for the right reasons, archaelogical and historic knowledge, not just for the lols - there's an awful lot still to be learnt about our built heritage and anything that can be gleaned before it gets levelled can be useful.

As an example of good urbex, here's where I used to work straight after leaving Uni:

You can catch it where rodents and other scavengers have been and left droppings, uneaten food, and then picking stuff up, like discarded files, chairs, etc - thick gloves, and good protective footwear is recommended - t-shirt and shorts not a good idea...

Said individual's primary interest seems to be photography and/or exploration. Wise(ish) head - E.G. Always goes in pairs in case of a fall / accident.

Even wandering around pigeon-infested attics is not a good idea without wearing a mask.

I did meet him a few years ago and he actually showed me some documents from the test cell where I worked that had my writing on them from 1985!!!

Definitely exploring Pyestock needed two people, some of those test cells and walkways were pretty high up!!
