Just been told the gym is back April 12th 17:44 - Mar 23 with 1194 viewsMullet

All being well. While it won’t be back to full on sweaty man on man action, just exercising, seeing the lads etc is great news.

Pretty concerned that I still have Covid issues cos my lungs still burn a lot and I’m massively out of shape but it does give rise to the idea things will creep back to before.

Here a lot of people seemed to act like the pandemic finished months ago, but I think you notice them easier in times of social control like we’ve had. Do we think we are due a relapse or will the government go full on liberty mode ASAP?

I'm kind of expecting a bit of a mini-spike now that schools are open, but we'll see.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I may be wrong, but I was told that date was for outdoor classes only?

I am currently fighting very hard for better h and s at our place. It’s uphill all the way. We’ve had cases again and bubbles isolating so I’m being tentative.

I’ve not seen the photos of what’s in place but we are on a big industrial unit so I dunno if the big doors will be open or not. I’ll even do roadwork circuits right now just to get my health back. It’s been a long winter.

Agree I’m looking forward to it. But I go to a kickboxing gym which is also in a warehouse type unit, and he’s said he can’t do any classes indoors till may.

In England only.

In Scotland it's the 26th April. And in Wales they will 'think about it' towards the end of April.

Does make you wonder. I have little faith in general that people will behave themselves once restrictions are lifted. Especially if we have a decent summer.

I wonder if it’ll be pad work and essentially bums and tums for blokes. Either way I’ll take anything they can offer.

The boxing gym next door tried bending the rules last year and public health descended on the whole estate, so once he’s got details sorted with them... you’re making me worried it’ll be taken apart by the weekend!

'Full on liberty mode' - something we'll never see again.

You might be able to 'look forward' to a socially distanced cup of coffee with a few people in the park, and maybe a couple of workouts, before we go back into lockdown again in a couple more months once this third wave inevitably hits.

Had a quick google.

This suggests exercise classes won’t be allowed :-(

Think that's overly pessimistic. There is the possibility of a March/April wave (which might be suppressed by the fact we're already in lockdown and isn't manifesting yet), then another one in around September, by which time we may have the majority of the adult population vaccinated.

I hope you're right.

Is my first sentence pessimistic too, or just realistic?

I do think some things will have changed for good. Mask-wearing may become common even when not mandated. Overseas travel may be reduced in scale. Working from home - at least some of the time - become a normal part of employment.

It will take some time to get out of the instinctive social distancing habit.

Indeed, it is quite possible that Covid-19 will not leave us altogether, but become something lurking in the background, with occasional flare-ups in spring and autumn. A situation we can keep on top of (much like Influenza), but which still has the capability to cause a few thousand deaths each year.

But some form of normal life will resume.
