Hopefully now Evans has gone, this will all get sorted out by the new lot.

Jewell Aims to End Annual Contract Woe 13th Apr 2012 08:43
Boss Paul Jewell says Town will offer new deals to players who have a year left on their current terms to prevent the annual impasse as contracts come to an end. Last year David Norris and Gareth McAuley left on free transfers as their deals came to an end without new terms having been agreed, while the same could happen this year with Grant Leadbitter, who is understood to have been offered a deal by Middlesbrough. 15

Aren't these different problems though?

Jewell was complaining about our failure to realise any value on good first team players, because we didn't sell them when they refused new contracts.

But our current problem is that we've signed players who aren't good, don't have any value, can't be sold and don't merit contract extensions.

We didn't really lose many players on frees under McCarthy. Think only Berra for personal reasons springs to mind. Otherwise we got fees for our better players. Given that pretty much everyone agrees the current squad isn't up to it and needs a big clear out I'm not sure why we'd want this current bunch to have been given new deals?

At a stretch you could complain that we've missed out on maybe ~£250-500k for Edwards by not being a bit more proactive in selling him this Summer?

Possibly, although whether there'd have been any genuine interest in him even at that kind of fee is debatable. He had a purple patch early this season but that aside he's been very poor for the most part here.

Yeah, good chance no interest would've materialised. Although I suppose just like there's usually a taker for someone with pace (Jackson), there's also usually somebody who thinks they can turn a 1 good performance in 5 player into something more consistent.

I think there were a few rumours around Edwards last summer actually, but not sure it went any further. He's quick and like you say there's always a market for players with pace.

All linked though, we kept Jackson even though Lambert didn't want to play him. We did the same thing as when Jewell was here with Bart & Knudsen.

Just a mess, the club has spent money so badly through most of Evans' time here.

McGoldrick was down to the McCarthy era wasn’t it?

He left the same season as McCarthy but I think if you go back and look at the board at the time most acknowledged it was time for Didz to move on. He just couldn't stay fit for more than half a season here and was one of our top earners. With hindsight we should have taken the £7m from Leicester when it was offered, thereafter his injury problems meant we were never likely to get much of a few for him.

Of this lot, I think it's perhaps only Edwards you could really make a case for being one we've let run down, as the rest all have options. Per EADT article recently:

Contracts with options: Chambers, Skuse, Ward, Donacien, Judge, Wilson, Sears, Jackson, Bishop, Nsiala, Nydam, El Mizouni, Przybek, Folami, Morris, Clements, Gibbs, Andoh, Z Brown, K Brown, Hughes

Contracts without options: Edwards, Wright

Unclear if contract contains option: Huws, Drinan, Cotter

Didn't Mick recommend the club keep him on and it was ultimately Hurst who wanted him gone?
