Personal foodie nostalgia 17:04 - Jul 7 with 446 views | hoppy | what are the first cakes you can really remember eating?

Personal foodie nostalgia on 17:09 - Jul 7 with 418 views | jeera | Battenberg was definitely a thing when I was a kid but mostly among the adults. The kids would touch it with a long pole, even at that age its pasty appearance was unappetizing. Rock cakes were popular because every child was taught how to make them which then forced them upon the family.

I'd forgotten about those. Yes another favourite for the kids, again taught in school along with stuff like blancmange!

You should have seen Seb’s face this leave when I got some Arctic Roll and told him that used to be my birthday treat. It was a look of utter pity.

I can remember 'Vienetta' being the dessert of luxury back in the 80's. The dessert that you would have when you went round to your middle class mate's house for tea and marvel at their microwave, TV with a remote control and central heating system. You can buy Vienetta now for a £1 in the Co-op.

I still get excited when the cook breaks out the Vienetta on the ship. It’s some cheap knock off, but still. Vienetta. Fabulous stuff.

Those chocolate crispie things were the first I can probably remember. Homemade rock cakes were a big 'favourite' too. It was in the mid-70s and we were pretty skint, so we only ever had homemade cakes and biscuits. I can still remember how excited my parents were when my mum got a part time job and then they could afford to buy biscuits! TWTD.

I remember saving with my first own money things like a pack of Jaffa cakes and keeping them in my room and taking a week over them. (A week Keno, not ....).

Is that what the pink 'serviette' in the background of the image is for?

Personal foodie nostalgia on 17:57 - Jul 7 with 346 views | factual_blue | Fruit cake, Lincolnshire plum bread. Either of which of course is perfectly completed by a nice piece of cheese. I will pass no comment on the abomination of a cake in your first picture.
