Even I wouldn't be stupid enough to give £130bn for nuclear weapons we don't need, to exit the world's most affluent trading bloc without a decent reason, give millions to firms with no track records to procure PPE and source ferries from a company with no history of owning boats. Plus, a bonus few million to an uneducated lapdancer who the PM happened to be boning at the time. But yes, Corbyn.

Worryingly, I can't find any evidence that we export much string, so if string is holding our economy together, we have hard times ahead.

My post was very much tongue in cheek just to be cheeky. I am not trying to get into this as we should all know by now all politicians lie to get into power. It's just the amount thats variable. They promise anything to get in and never deliver, no matter what side of the equation they sit.

Yeah of course Corbyn. It's his fault that my bins weren't collected this morning. Also, I've got an annoying cat who loves taking a dump in my rosebushes. That's his fault as well. When in doubt, blame Corbyn!

Really? Do you really think they are all the same and the scale of open corruption this Government is giving us is just inevitable? Isn't that the biggest problem? Too many of the electorate do not care about it!

Nope, they are not the same, some prospective governments lie more than others to get into power. To be honest, most of the electorate don't know what they are voting for, they are either following the well-trodden paths of their ancestors or fall for the most popular candidate of the time. It's not a great state to be in I am afraid.

You are excusing this Government with a "they are all the same". If that makes the argument that this corrupt Government is openly on a scale not even close to anything ever seen before irrelevant then that is the problem. How is that "binary"? Please explain the scale of corruption that even begins to compare with this Government from any previous one, red, blue or coalition.

We are not talking about broken electoral promises. We are talking about open corruption. This party would have changed the rules rather than punish one MP for flagrant breaches of them but for the backlash they have suffered. This party spent billions of pounds on contracts to their friends that others were not allowed to bid for and that they knew their friends would be unable to deliver over Brexit preparations and over PPE. I am sure there is more too but isn't that alone enough?

Not really. I just didn't like you're 'they're all the same!' remark when it's demonstrably untrue. Painting it out to be like that is disingenuous and paints the opposition in a bad light (no matter what colour) as the same during the height of a Tory sleaze scandal. They're in no way equatable.

You've just taken my open statement around all governments over the years telling lies to gain power and translated it into a position of support for the current government. That to me is binary as it's gone from neutral to partisan. This government gets worse and worse by the day, but it doesn't deflect from previous ones doing exactly the same, albeit on differing levels. There have been many governments before this one, and guess what? They all lie to gain power. Name me one government that has stuck to all its prelection promises.....

I think you misinterpreting my statement. My statement was around all governments lie to get into power. That was it. No indication of the magnitude, just that they lie. Full stop. If you want to dive down into the next level of granularity, then yes there is an incredible variance between each government. That I hope we can agree on.

‘They’re all the same” downplays the seriousness of some of the accusations against this particular government, so gives the impression of indirect support (even if you didn’t intend it). What we saw yesterday, the cash/favours for peerages, attacks on the judiciary, restrictions on rights to protest, curbing of academic freedoms, blatant lying at the dispatch box, etc., etc., are dangerous departures from what’s normal. I’m not saying others have been saints, but this is clearly different to what we’ve seen before.

So you have taken a thread on political corruption and misuse of taxpayer money and commented on broken election promises. Why have you chosen to do that? Do you believe all Governments have corruptly spent taxpayer funds and corruptly taken corporate bribes and have corruptly attempted to excuse it? I will name you several that have not: Thatcher's, Major's, Brown's, May's, even Cameron's (as bad as it was). When cases were brought to light they were dealt with. You could argue about some of those making money from business after they have left parliament but that is not against the rules and seems in no way directly equated to the way they governed and influence they still hold.

Well in fact I was talking about broken electoral promises and how the government lies to get into power. Not what happens post-election night. That was kind of the whole point. You bought corruption into the conversation, which while it is important to discuss (and to be honest I agree with you) it had nothing to do with my original comment. Man oh man this board at times....
