A concern going into the summer is McKenna's struggles to turn games around... 17:04 - Apr 2 with 2232 views | pointofblue | Just four points from a possible 15 after conceding the first goal since he took over. It's just not good enough for a team with supposed promotion ambitions - especially when you consider that, excluding Accrington who we did beat, the sides we failed to win against were Bolton (11th), Wednesday (5th), Morecambe (21st) and Cambridge (13th). Wednesday aside, they're hardly the division's strongest sides. Anyway, our season is over - let's see the youngsters over the next few weeks. I think we have a good idea out of the seniors who deserve to be here next season and who need to be moved on.

A concern going into the summer is McKenna's struggles to turn games around... on 17:11 - Apr 2 with 1587 views | wkj | I don't honestly think McKenna's qualities of turning games around is the issue as much as it is getting a couple of players in key spots. I'm sorry if this offends anyone (not really), but Norwood shown how deserving he is of a contract today and Thompson/Penney just arent the people we need on the left. I've said this time and again, if you're gonna cross in League 1, you need to do it early and have the players to do it, if you don't, your wingers need to be able to cut inside (Burns).

I’m not totally convinced it’s just personnel, I think we need to find a few tweaks to our final 3rd approach as well.

In that case we have to adapt tactically to take into account our weaknesses. When comparing our squad to the rest of the division, we should not really use an excuse of missing players in key spots. [Post edited 2 Apr 2022 17:15]

Well, other than having Norwood and Chaplin on the bench, I'm not sure what else could have been done tactically.

Someone (preferably a psychologist) just needs to get hold of the forwards and tell thrm to pull the bloody trigger. It's OK if you miss but "if you don't shoot, you don't score". Either that or we stick burns up front.

Tweaks would automatically come with new personnel though wouldnt they? remember these are still mostly other manager's players | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We need better than Norwood and the forwards we currently have. Trouble is good forwards are like gold dust.

There were enough half-chances though. Celina running into defenders when one-on-one, norwood over the top and tried a loopy cross to the far post, bonne squeezing through 2 defenders then inexplicably going backwards at the end.

Also Chaplin's first touch (or lack of it)

That is the most irritating thing for me. We beat Burton 3-0; he switches it around and we draw limply against Cheltenham. We defeat Plymouth with what was the best all round performance of the season and he made changes again. What's wrong with sticking to a winning XI? Bakinson probably put in his best performance last week so he's replaced by Carroll? Why alter our number ten combination when Celina and Aluko did well together last week (albeit Chaplin was hardly our worst player). I think credit is deserved for trying to switch things up when we were trailing but even then it was obvious it was not working at half time - managers nowadays seem to have aversion to changes before the second half unless it's going disastrously wrong.

Chaplin's ball control was particularly noticeable against Colchester in the Pizza Cup - I don't think the fella is any better than Gwion Edwards in all honesty, and yes Chaplin can score - but so too could Gwion.

Someone said it during the week but getting a free scoring striker at this level feels like luck to a degree. The top scorers this season are Stewart (Sunderland), May (Cheltenham), Stockton (Morecambe), Keane (Wigan), Taylor (Oxford), Smith (Rotherham), Hardie (Plymouth), Twine (MK Dons), Brannagan (Oxford) and Lang (Wigan). Other than Taylor, would anyone have predicted those to be the top ten this season?

Same XI as last week should have started. If Norwood still had a nightmare first half he could have been subbed at half time.

Our lack of goals stopped when for what ever reason McKenna stopped Playing Norwood and bonne upfront together and started tinkering with the team and formation. The formation stops us conceding a lot but prevents us scoring. The less we score the harder it gets because strikers lose confidence.

That's an interesting point - he changed it after his first defeat at Bolton. Fpor Wycombe, Gillingham and the game at Bolton we played more of a 3-4-1-2.
