I see the Russian military is having another good day on 09:07 - Apr 14 with 1600 views | Churchman | The Russians have said it suffered an explosion and all the crew are evacuated and safe. The Ukrainians say a couple of missiles hit it. One report says they used two Turkish drones to distract the ship’s radar and slipped a couple of missiles in. The Daily Mirror have published this photo. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/russian-flagship-fired-snake-island-267 Who knows what the truth is? What is certain is that this rather elderly warship has had a bad day and is out of action. Propaganda wise it’s good news for Zelenski, especially as the ship is/was called Moskva (Moscow). Interesting fact - the German pocket battleship Deutschland (basically an upgunned cruiser that sacrificed protection for 6 x 11 inch guns) was renamed Lutzow after a Prussian general on the orders of Hitler. He didn’t like risking a ship with the country’s name on it. Ironically, it survived the war anyway. [Post edited 14 Apr 2022 11:25]

If a magazine has, indeed, exploded, I doubt they avoided casualties. It will, as you say, put the ship out of action for some time, even if not sunk. It may be elderly, but then so is the bulk of the Russian kit, just upgraded to some extent (even the vaunted T-90 tank is really just an improved version of the Soviet-era T-72). The fact Ukraine has managed to do this will be of serious concern to those running the Russian blockade in the Black Sea. Or it might have actually been an accident. Which should be of equal concern to the Russians, if negligence is costing them major warships. Also today, the Ukrainians have managed to blow up a bridge on an important road while a Russian convoy was crossing it. Plus the attempt to recruit thousands of men from the Donbas separatist regions smacks of desperation - it would take weeks to train them up and organise into units if they are to be effective.

Ah, but the press gang was only ever a form of conscription, albeit a rather violent one!

Interesting that though the Moskva looked quite modern it’s actually about the same age as the General Belgrano was when HMS Conqueror sank it. If it has suffered some sort of fire, at best it’ll be out of the war, at worse scratched. It’s actually quite large by modern day standards. I’d be surprised if it was an accident. Tbh there’s even more embarrassment to the Russians if it is. Yes, the Russians have some good kit, but also plenty of old stuff. I was surprised to learn that ammunition was stored around the turret - hence so many turrets being blown out when their tanks are hit. It kind of reminds me of Beatty’s Battlecruisers at Jutland in that they did exactly the same thing to speed rate of fire. It is almost certainly one of the reasons for the loss of Indefatigable, Queen Mary and later Invincible. Beatty’s flagship Lion was also nearly lost when Q turret was hit.

The price they pay for using an autoloader. That and Soviet/Russian servicemen losing limbs or fingers to the mechanism, which was apparently not uncommon.

You’d get to the bottom of your drink and you’d think, hello, there’s a coin at the bottom of this. Weird! And then the lights would go out. You’d taken the Kings shilling. Yep, the hangover literally from hell the following day. Still, at least with this form of conscription you could run away if you heard they were on their way. You couldn’t in WW1 and 2.

I’ve read that autoloaders, despite the weight and crew saving aren’t as quick or efficient as a trained loader - and that’s without the finger and limb loss. Part of the problem is if you have to change out the ammunition for different targets. It’s a slow process. I got to drive a tank many years ago. It was brilliant fun but it’s the last place I’d want to be with an angry enemy about. [Post edited 14 Apr 2022 11:56]

One minute you're having the time of your life, the next you're on a ship to the new world! Bit like the time I woke up next to a Daily Mail journalist, but possibly not as bad.

Indeed. Have heard that the autoloader can't automatically unload if different ammo is required. Think the training issue is one reason the Soviets/Russians have used them, given the numbers of conscripts employed.

It certainly looks modern compared to the pride of the fleet the Admiral Kuznetsov:

You know what, as a relative spring chicken I didn't know too much about JSP aside from her being on Loose Women and the odd columnist for right-wing rags over the years. But the book about L!ve TV really gave a good run-down of her background and prominence back in the 80s/90s. The idea of her and Kelvin Mackenzie running a whole TV channel is and was frightening.

It looked ready to sink without any help when it chugged through the channel a few years ago. After a fire in 2019 I gather it’s being refitted. Not surprised. Presumably replacing the coal fired boilers, looking at the climate change levels of smoke in that picture.
