I love it when the club recognise legends 10:17 - Jul 14 with 1609 viewsSTYG

It's been another part of the new regime that I have been impressed with. The pictures of legends, the flags, the banners, all of the signage. Fantastic stuff.

It would be great to see another Town legend honoured in the most fitting way possible, at home to Bolton, but I've seen nothing from the club yet. Would not be right not to pay tribute to someone who had a massive part in helping us get back to the top.

Has anyone heard about Barry Knight Day? Only a few weeks until the big fixture. Surely they have released plans by now.

A true great. Can you imagine a League One ref of today having that fixture? Every penalty and yellow card was justified and one of the reds (still think Whitlow was unfortunate because Knight was just fed up with their deliberate fouls at that stage) but the man reffed the game brilliantly and didn't let their antics go unpunished. A real icon for referees everywhere.

Maybe we can all be given yellow and red cards to wave about? They can put a temporary roof on the away dugout for the Bolton manager to repeatedly punch?

Whitlow was a second booking, having been given what seemed like about 15 chances. Totally deserved.

Aiye, his second booking offense was much softer than some of the others he was given the benefit of the doubt over.

Wasn't he a straight red?

Robbie Elliott got a second yellow for that ridiculous kick out (at Clapham? Reuser?)

EDIT - This suggests a straight red. Knew I wasn't dreaming. Seemed ridiculous he was given a red with two players covering but think Knight just had enough of them fouling us every time we were a threat.

Why are two people adamant it was a soft second yellow? Have I lost the plot?

Google searches confirm it was a straight red and in any event, had it been a second yellow, he blatantly tripped a player about to break into the penalty area, so it would have been a deserved second yellow.

Even the commentator was shocked. If he'd been on a yellow he'd have been talking about how he could go for that.

It's not like it can be confused with a harsh second yellow for Elliott who completely kicked out / went in from behind.

Why are others remembering the events the same, yet differently to what happened!

The extremely biased Bolton commentary claims it was a straight red but it wasn't and I'm not sure the internet records from 2000 are totally reliable.

However, this has come up on TWTD plenty of times since and I'm not the only one convinced Knight showed Whitlow a second yellow based on being at the match not what was shown on TV.

I do remember thinking he was on a yellow at the time and then seeing the red go up, but didn't see a yellow go up first which is why I was surprised, in the ground, that he'd gone straight to red. We just assumed it wasn't him that we thought had been booked earlier - as it was easy to lose count.

I know the Bolton coverage is appalling but watched the Anglia highlights at 10.45 or whenever they were on as soon as I got home and nothing in those changed my minds.

Every record I have since has said straight red, to the point I now accept it as fact. Is it one of those where he'd been booked, but because the ref gave a straight red, ye olde websites didn't have the yellow and red combined icon so removed the yellow for the red?

One or two of his challenges probably could have been a straight red card too - but I distinctly remember him having been booked also, having been there myself as well.

Weird.

Like I say, when he made the foul, we were like 'that's got to be a second yellow' and then Knight walked over and pulled the red out.

God knows then! The main thing is he walked and we won! I'm obviously losing the plot.

Next you'll be telling me that Peter Osgood didn't win us the 78 FA Cup Final! I remember it well.

I wouldn't be able to tell you about that as I was busy swimming around in my father's testicles at the time.

Second penalty (which was saved by Jaaskelainen) was the wrong decision. Everything else was correct.

Allardyce though still has had a temerity to moan about Knight in his book. They got what they deserved for their approach.

Not a fan of that tbh as it implies he favoured us. All those decisions were justified, he simply applied the laws and refused to be bullied by a sh1thouse team and manager.

I’m not saying he favoured us. He did his job.

He should be celebrated for it.

Imagine today’s refs!

Allardyce seemed to assume a ref wouldn’t keep giving fouls and cards and set out to foul us whenever we got into a good position. Knight was undeterred and punished everything fairly and without favour.

It was a rarity then and in the EFL nowadays no way it goes the same way. The ref would have let them get away with a lot more to start with and probably thereafter.

I get that it's a joke - but celebrating a ref for getting it right is like clapping for a Hermes driver who doesn't launch your package into orbit instead of ringing the doorbell.

Just rename the Away bar for the day. Bit of Bluetac, cover the existing "Barry's Red Card Bar"...couple of photos dotted around. Like some clubs do when you go away to tell you how far you've travelled, etc

It shouldn't be necessary. But we live in a world where we'd genuinely rejoice if a Hermes driver delivered a package without damage and to the right address or an EFL referee didn't have an absolute shocker.

Both as rare as a Cole Skuse goal.

Has Big Sam mellowed at all? Ever confessed to telling his team to try and kick us off the pitch? The crazy thing is, they were a damn good side and didn’t need to do that.

I was at the game and Barry Knight was lenient with Bolton. Their players’ behaviour was a disgrace and their attempt to bully their way through ridiculous. I confess I thought Whitlow was booked twice for his sending off, the first time for the referee chase and s’housing of Stewart - but I might be wrong. The second challenge looked a yellow from the tv pics. I was at the wrong end and angle to see it clearly in the ground.

The chase the ref episode was right in front of me. I was shouting at the Bolton players to push the ref over or thump him - that’d have meant game over. As it was if he’d sent one or two off there and then, it wouldn’t have been wrong. The Elliott challenge again was quite close to me. He dived in and if ever there was a straight red that was it. He lost it and in frustration tried to do the player.

The Bolton players niggled, fouled and chipped away throughout. I guess, as some teams did, they thought Ipswich a bit soft. Bolton should give Barry Knight a medal. He could easily have lost patience and sent more players off and left Bolton with the disgrace of abandoning the game.

Still think my favourite has to be Elliott grabbing Johnno and throwing him to the ground when the ball was harmlessly bouncing towards Jaaskelainen. WTF was that all about!

Never seen a team lose their heads like they did.

Not sure if I’m going to be whooshed, but considering since then Bolton have been in the PL for far longer than us, all this seems a bit silly. A bit like some England fans who bang on about 1966 whenever we play Germany forgetting that since then they have won the WC a couple of times. Their modern recent history is far better than ours.

Reuser, and what made that one bad was the knowledge that Reuser had only fairly recently come back from an almost career ending injury at Ajax, luckily he was ok but awful challenge through the back of him.

Elliott went in from behind on Reuser, scissor tackle and got nothing of the ball, annihilated the man and then looked stunned when Knight pulled out the red. Possibly the most nailed on red I've ever seen.

Genuinely, I don't think Knight got any of the three penalty calls wrong and, arguably, could/should have sent off Whitlow earlier.

I've never seen a game where one players' force of will made their team come through more than Magic did that night. He was not going home without booking a ticket to Wembley - what a bloke!

Jim hated losing so much and was the sort of person that was so aggrieved at the manner in which we may lose - being kicked off the park - that it almost became a superpower.
