I’ve enjoyed watching the women’s Euros 20:32 - Jul 20 with 2343 viewsChrisd

Tonight’s games between England and Spain is shaping up nicely and I feel now is where you’ll see some really competitive games, but why do they make comparisons with the men’s game? For example, Ellen White is a couple of goals behind Wayne Rooney’s all time England record. Surely, it’s two separate entities and any comparison or record should be made across their respective games, not across the genders?

Not one England player has imposed themselves on the game so far. Need to up their game...be a good deal more adventurous in their forward play.

The most reassuring thing so far this evening is that women will never understand the offside rule.
Commentators needed x3 replays to spot the blindingly clear reason for the disallowed goal.

I think the idea that Ellen White is "going to break Wayne Rooney's record" is pure modern clickbait, designed to garner attention.
I don't watch much women's football, but this is a decent contest & the standard is much better than I expected.

Yet you’ve said “Wayne Rooney’s all time England record” yourself. If a man can hold that record why can’t a woman? I’m not having a pop btw, the language is hard wired into us. If we split the records by gender, then we should be referring to ‘Rooney’s all time men’s England record’.

I don’t mind whether they’re segregated or combined, as long as there’s a consensus and consistency.

I know what you’re saying, but the comparison for me is based from their own respective games and should be separated by gender. Although the woman’s game has made significant strides forward, the levels are different, there’s no escaping that.

That’s fine. We just then need to be clear there’s a mens and womens ranking. Rooney can’t have them both in a combined table. He has the mens record. Feck knows what happens if/when a trans player gets to the top, but maybe we can worry about that later!

For me it’s total wrong to even make any comparisons.

Some say the womens game is “ slow”. But what you are really seeing is the basic physiological differences between male vs female.

Females are nearly 70% weaker than their male counterparts parts ( Princeton university ) , yet they play on the same size of pitch. So the woman’s game will look slower. They can’t reproduce ( in the main) the same power in kicking, jumping or running. But to expect the same pace, intensity and power displayed by their male counterparts is ridiculous.

The female goalkeepers can look flaky in their attempts to get to some shots. But the average International female GK is 7 inches shorter than the average PL male GK, yet the woman’s game uses the same goal sizes.

No one criticisers young males playing their football on smaller sized pitches - they do this because they are smaller and weaker than their senior male counterparts . But this is “accepted”, and allowances are made by fans. We don’t compare a young male player with his senior colleague and we don’t “ expect” the same level of performance, so why should we in the woman’s game?

The woman’s game has improved exponentially over recent years. Yet the birthplace of the game, England, lags behind the rest of the World in their acceptance of females playing the game. The sexism directed by some many males towards the female players is shameful. But I expect these individuals are those most likely to still marginalise other areas of society such as ethnic, gender, disabled and sexual preferences. Thank god our owners don’t and are planning to greater integrate the female game with their make counterparts at ITFC .

The attitudes will of course change over time, but it’s a shame some males still can’t help but be derogatory towards the female game, ( and female sport in general). What are they afraid of ?

I watched extra time last night.
Didn't mean to put it on but was bored flicking through.
I've not watched women's football for years and when I did the standard seemed dire. (Almost as bad as Accrington away in the FA Cup a few years back).
I have to say I was impressed with the standard.
Some of the footwork on show was terrific.

Lovely strike for the winner to by the lass Georgia something. Can't remember her last name.

Poll: Apologies I'm bored. How many signings will we have by Plymouth at home.

All of these things are true and also blindingly obvious. The level of bitterness in the vitriol that often comes across in some men's comments about the women's game only suggests to me that they hate women, or are terrified of them.

Perhaps it's coming mostly from physically or athletically weak men who feel threatened that whilst being weaker than male footballers on average, these women are stronger than those men who are making the criticisms?

Ugh, annoyingly I need to bite on something and run for cover.

ArnieM puts across a decent argument. And you also seem reasonable. I just think maybe there's something you haven't considered.

I've tried watching mens baseball as an example. It has a huge fanbase so there must be something to it. But I just don't like it or enjoy watching it. This doesn't make me a baseball'ist, or sexist against the gender playing that game. It just means I don't enjoy watching it.

Same goes for women's football. It's great that you guys enjoy watching it. I just don't. This does not mean I hate women. It just means I don't enjoy the level of women's football.

I apologise if this makes me "wrong". But it does not make me or any man who comments negatively about women's football terrified of women, or physically / athletically weak either. Or for that matter, have any other agenda apart from the fact we think it's a bit rubbish.

That's all.

Well said. My comments are probably over the top a bit, having read them back, and they certainly don't apply to your point of view as expressed here.

I'm thinking more of the some of the snide and unnecessary put downs we have seen here and elsewhere, and particularly some of the comments aimed at the ITFC women's team in their cup games against Premier League opposition. Perhaps I'm being too defensive of our lasses and a little old-fashioned, but there you go.

I think some of the negative comments about women's football are due to its over-promotion by certain segments of the media, notably the BBC, who do it largely because its one of the few sports they get to show live. Plus the "clickbait" headlines, such as about Ellen white being "about to break Wayne Rooney's record". These drive comments on social media from those with extreme positions on the near pointless debate, which is largely what drives the likes of Twitter anyway. Rather like politics, the majority are fairly middle of the road & keep quiet.

Think you're exactly right. It hasn't just been the BBC, Sky Sports are the same. I feel if you are prepared to accept it for what it is and look beyond all the other nonsense then you will feel entertained and enjoy the football - last night's game being a good example.

Saw a trailer for FIFA 23 this morning.

About 2 minutes long and probably 40 seconds of it are women's teams. The comments are predictable.

It's lost on people that the men or boys that buy FIFA will still do so anyway. This is now aimed at the women and girls that won't but might now. Good move by EA on a business level and equality level.

The over promotion of women's football is understandable too. They don't need to sell anything to blokes. Blokes have decided by now if they like football or not. It's great that they are now making women and girls feel included.

Totes ba. England grew more confident the longer it went on. Spain have more technically quality players as far as I could tell, but I don't watch much womens football. Certainly last night was several notches up in terms of excitement from the couple of earlier matches I caught.

The winning goal was an absolute cracker, birds or no birds

I don't think it is over-promotion at all. It is being promoted no more than Euro 2020 was last year, or the World Cup will be later in the year. Why shouldn't they promote an elite competition that they have the rights to broadcast?
It takes a long time to persuade people that they are wrong about something, but in five, ten, maybe fifteen years time, it will be seen as completely normal and the BBC will be able to look back on their contribution to the new status quo with some pride.

don't think the men's game can claim ownership of the word 'england". logically if you refer to england's top scorer, without adding men's or women's as a qualifier, it has to be whoever has scored the most goals for england - currently rooney.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
