That's very interesting. Actually genetic evidence suggests that approximately 62% of the Icelandic maternal gene pool is derived from Irish and Scottish Gaels, while 37% is of Nordic origin. About 20-25% of the Icelandic paternal gene pool is of Gaelic origin, with the rest being Nordic. At the same time, a sizeable proportion of the genetic gene pool in Shetland and Orkney is Nordic. All of this is a result of the movements from the 9th century onwards between the Nordic lands, Dublin, the Isle of Man, the Western Isles, Shetland and Orkney. I have an interest in this area because my grandmother hailed from the most northerly inhabited isle in the UK, namely, Unst in the Shetland Isles. A version of Norse, Norn, existed in the Shetlands until the 19th century. In addition, tracing my ancestors there shows evidence of the Norse naming system, which still exists today in Iceland, and which continued in the Shetlands until the 19th century (eg. one of my ancestors is called Grizel Mansdaughter). Finally, I came up with Alan the Stout Brazil from another of the Icelandic sagas, the Orkney Saga, which deals with Shetland and Orkney, and which contains a character called Sigurd the Stout. There is an information board in the CalMac terminal at Ullapool that asserts that all Icelandic women in the time period we are talking about were in fact Gaels due to the fiendish Northlanders bloodthirsty raiding parties which also saw all the local women of the Highlands and Islands carried off in the longships. I think they may have embellished the truth a little bit (and I have embellished it a whole lot more.)

Yes, I rather suspected that from the figures, and think I have read this before.

Ah yes, Balder, the scribe and keeper of the scrolls. There is a myth that he had an underling called Gavlar the less who often went on raiding party’s at about 11.00pm.
