It's that time of year for me and I see all quotes have risen from last year.

Feeling victimised here as we do, knowing we're all the best and safest drivers out there paying for everyone else's mishaps.

Anyone have any gems they would like to share, companies that may not show up on the usual price comparison sites radar?

you're clearly not the best/safest driver.... I just got my renewal - down about 25% on last year.

Make sure that all the information is correct, values and mileage etc
Don't use the assumptions that some aggregate sites assume about you as sometimes the smallest change can make a big difference,
Also check if there is an alternative job title for your employment as that can make a difference,

Just play around with the data to see what works but make sure it is accurate as lying about some info could leave you in the poop if you have an accident

Agree with all you say but everything is accurate and up to date and all details are saved from previous years.

I am a little confused as to why it's gone up when the past few years it's been steadily decreasing. If it was across the board then sure, I'd get it.

Like I say, I was wondering if anyone uses firms that are outside of the usual group that crop up regardless of which comparison site is searched.

Funny really that, for example, Tesco are showing up as the cheapest offer on two different sites yet at different prices.

I renewed mine in June and got a very good reduction on it. To be fair, my car, my partners car and our home insurance is one of them multi-deals, but all 3 of ours came down for the year.

2 things:

1) Have you always been with the same provider or tended to move every year? If the latter you can thank the FCA’s legislation that came in at the start of the year. Basically insurers had previously tended to offer cheaper premiums to new customers to win the business then increase at renewal - but that’s not allowed now so the cost has generally gone up for people who tended to search the market each year

2) Inflation - repairs/replacing vehicles costs more. Higher claim costs = higher premiums

There aren’t really any secrets outside what has already been mentioned, only thing I’d add is to check all of the main comparison sites (CompareTheMarket, GoCompare, Confused and MoneySuperMarket) as all will have different providers and some will have different prices. Also Aviva and Direct Line as main players that aren’t on them. You could check other direct providers but most will be on (and cheaper on) the comparison sites - might be worth checking whoever is cheapest via them directly though just in case. Finally stating the obvious here but check excesses and cover etc as some providers on the comparison sites will have hefty excesses etc, the cheapest might not end up the cheapest if something goes wrong

Hi.

I do change provider pretty much every year for the reasons you outline.

I have been going through Go Compare for the past 3 years as the prices have been excellent and they cover excess up to £250 which is plenty enough for me.

I'm being petty really as I'm getting a bit tight but more accurately I'm becoming more self-entitled with age when it comes to driving. I feel it shouldn't be long until I'm being paid for using the road because of long-standing good services and all that.

I shall try Aviva and Direct Line just in case.

Thanks.

esure.

I sometimes switch, but generally not if they are within 15 quid of what I could get elsewhere.

I shall give them a look too, ta.

It's gone up around 80 quid which, although isn't the end of the world, I would rather that £80 stayed with me than went to them.

I used to work on the phones in the renewal department of a broker. When we wanted to get the price down we tried adding a 40+ female spouse with a clean record as an adittional driver as this often brought the premium down with some insurers.

Aside from that, standard advice is always to get on the phone to your provider. They will have underwriters on hand who can write policies to match or beat anything else you've got if they can. Not much use of they're up accross the board of course as they'll want to know what price you've got and where, but they do have the power to discount loads. All info true of about 2009 however!

Hard truth is I found that insurers can change their prices or prefered risk profiles and like a flash that's a heap of customers we're no longer competitive on.

Aside from the obvious - price isn’t everything some insurance providers might provide something that can be useful - eg unlimited usage in Europe.

It’s always best to use a different name and address a few doors down when idly looking at prices - as cookies remember you and keep prices high.

The only other suggestion that might help is reducing your mileage - petrol costs might do that for you anyway - and increasing your excess - which works as long as you don’t have an accident.

Thanks for the info.

I've just settled on a policy just £25 more than last years but £50 less than the renewal price, which is fine.

What isn't fine is it's with the same bloody insurer which came up cheaper through Money Supermarket.

Got my renewal emailed yesterday oddly enough, runs out next month. Mine is expensive these days because I live in central London, it literally doubled when I moved here but without looking at others if I stay where I am it's gone from £50 month to £40 give or take a pound.

That's with quotemehappy, been with them for a while and been happy with the service. Not made any claims but changes etc are easy enough to make and they don't charge the earth.

I will have a scout around the market place, but unlikely I'll change.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

General accident was cheapest for me.

General Accident still exists? Crikey, they were my insurers who paid out when I crashed on the new M4 in 1967. I haven't claimed - or had an accident - since! Heck, why did I say that? Asking for trouble.

I always take account of Which?'s list of reliable insurers. Their top provider is always NFU Mutual, but they are ridiculously expensive. I always check that the cheapest quote is from one of Which?'s reliable firms.
