having stopped about 18 months ago. All the wins from this season are up there and the commentary from yesterday gives the lie to the feeling that Brenner Woolley can take or leave Town doing well.

I think the issue with Brenner in the past was not whether he could take or leave Ipswich doing well, but rather that he got equally excited at some, not all, of our opponents' goals. That, for me, was indisputable. I write "was" and not "is" because he is no longer on iFollow.
Interestingly, Radio Solent on Saturday were great commentators. Descriptive, fair but partisan, hardly a mistake, and some interesting opinions and views.

The issue was people who would prefer a cheerleader who could hold their hand when we concede and tell them it'll all be alright, rather than a commentator who shows natural excitement at exciting bits and conveys them to the listener.

This is nonsense. He might have got as loud when opponents scored, but if the listener can't discern the difference in tone and emotion when Town score vs the oppo then that's their problem.

Heard the cheerleader argument on many occasions. Your version of it seems far fetched.

It is not nonsense. It is an opinion based on fact. A listener of a local radio station shouldn't have difficulty in discerning the differences between a home or away goal. It should be pretty obvious, but with Brenner it was sometimes and on other occasions, it clearly wasn't.

Again, that's on you if you can't determine which team is on the attack and scoring.

I thought we were talking about the quality of the commentary of BW. You wrote it yourself that there is no difference in loudness between him commenting on an Ipswich or opposition goal. I have merely said that it should not be the case that a radio listener should have to try to discern any differences. It should be obvious. Either comment on what I write, or leave it, but don't twist my words.

It's always been obvious to me. I'd suggest you can't be listening properly if you're bemused as to if Ipswich or the opposition has scored.

It is obvious to me who had scored because I watch the games, but the commentary of Brenner is what I thought we were discussing, and fact is he would sometimes get as excited in his commentary of an oppo goal as he did with an Ipswich one. Is it possible for you to comprehend that point?

It is obvious, because he's got a smart little tactic he's engineered that the listener in question (and, I assume, you) might have missed, in that if it's us scoring, the names BW mentions will tend to be those of the players who play for us, whereas if it's the opposition scoring they will tend to be those of the players who play for the opposition. Listen out for it!

The official itfc one has gone a bit Partridge. They've got a Sunday Stroll with Richard Keogh which is all very awkward and they haven't even bothered with the Plymouth highlights.

Nice sarcasm! I hope you are deliberately missing the point, like I assume Flashing Smile is.
If you are really interested though, the pertinent point was not what he says, i.e. players names etc, but how he says it, i.e. the level of excitement that he imparts in his commentary of opposition goals in comparison to Ipswich goals. I maintain that there are occasions (careful, this is where simpletons might get confused) when he showed no discernible difference in the excitement that he showed for ours or opposition goals.
I personally prefer an Ipswich commentary to be a bit partisan, not over the top. Like Terry Baxter or Brian Knights used to do.

Ahh Brenner’s voice is one thing I’ve greatly missed this season with the new iFollow lineup.
Have to feel for him really as he’s been the voice of town for so long now.
Out of interest. Who did BBC Suffolk commentary before? I can’t remember that far back!
Couldn't agree more. Brenner is just more descriptive, tonal, emotional and enthusiastic than the in-house chap. These days I have to make do by listening to him pre-match and post-match, along with the excellent Graham Mac.

I'm not missing anything. You suggested some people sometimes don't know who's scored. I suggested they're not listening properly.
The fact you actually want a commentator to be partisan confirms what I've suggested all along - you want a cheerleader rather than a commentator. I, personally, would rather have a commentator conveying what's actually happening. That is their job after all. If you like something different that's fine, but don't have a go at a commentator for doing his job and not doing what YOU want instead.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

He may raise his voice when the opposition score but that is necessary to inform the listener who is not present, but I never sense any happiness on his part. I might add that I listened to the current in-house commentator against Forest Green and it wasn't obvious to me on occasions that we had even scored. Still, it's clearly a matter of opinion, and mine is no better or worse than yours.

I assume that you are referring to this "A listener of a local radio station shouldn't have difficulty in discerning the differences between a home or away goal." as an isolated statement instead of in the context of what I had already written "I think the issue with Brenner in the past was not whether he could take or leave Ipswich doing well, but rather that he got equally excited at some, not all, of our opponents' goals." It is his excitement and enthusiasm for some opposition goals that I and many others have not liked. I am not sure I can make it any clearer.
If you insist on interpreting "a bit partisan" as "cheerleader" then you are deliberately missing the point there as well. Maybe it is not deliberate?
I too would prefer a commentator to convey what is actually happening. I am not having "a go" at anybody for doing their job. I am pointing out that he gets equally excited at opposition goals on occasions. I would prefer a commentator that doesn't do that. Is it so difficult to comprehend?

"Excited" does not mean exactly the same as "loud". Is it so difficult to comprehend?

It is more than just raising his voice. He gives mixed signals in the excitement in his voice. As you correctly state, it is opinions. I am glad that I don't have to listen to it anymore.
Think Forest Green was the game where there were technical problems with the commentary on iFollow? I think that Glenn Wheeler is improving and co-commentators, like Ian Westlake, are great.
