Quarter Past Season 18:42 - Oct 8 with 1025 viewsKropotkin123

Thought I'd do a mini retrospective, give that we are now a quarter of the way through the season (11.5 games - Majority of the teams just played their 12th game).

Expectations
We've always know we are an intelligent bunch and the predictions for the season ahead really underline our superhuman abilities. There no sign of the FiveThirtyEight Super Computer, as it languishes in 42nd.

Form
Town, who sit in 2nd place, after 13 games, have played a few more than Portsmouth and one more than a couple of teams. But our PPG* is the second highest in the division, with our away form outperforming everyone.

Our overall form currently translates into 96 goals and 104 points. 92 points is the classic bar of win at home and draw away. Plymouth (107) and Portsmouth (97) join Ipswich in currently exceeding that, and Sheff Wed are in touching distance (88).

Up Top
Going into the season this was a significant apprehension for many Town fans. We seemingly missed out on our primary target for the striker position. Ipswich typically play with 1 striker and 2 forwards, and these forwards are expected to score, as they will get many of the best opportunities.

Whatever way you cut it, we are scoring goals consistently and equitably. By that, I mean we have scored a lot, and that has been spread out across the games. We've scored one goal three times, two goals six times and three goals four times.

In the middle
On Whoscored, our midfield duo are ranked first (Lee Evans: 7.39) and second (Sam Morsy: 7.19). They've provided tempo, range, assists (2), goals (5) and yellow cards! (6). Depending on our play, Leif Davis and Wes Burns also operate in the midfield. They've provided a further 2 goals, 5 assists and 5 yellow cards. They are ranked third (Wes Burns: 7.07) and fifth (Leif Davis: 7.00) in their overall contribution.

At the Back
The back line have continued to perform well. We are currently the third best defence in the league (11 conceded in 13 games) or equal third if you are ignoring games played. Although we do still have some question marks against the better teams, we seemed much more assured against Portsmouth.

Last Season
Compared to this time last year we are flying. If you haven't seen it already, I'd recommend you check out Nthsuffolkblue's thread:
Statistical comparison with last season by Nthsuffolkblue 6 Aug 2022 15:08
If we take each match as a comparison replacing the promoted and relegated teams with those directly replacing them ...

After 1 match we are +1 point, +3 GD and -1 GF.

Today's match Forest Green replace Gillingham who we beat 0-4 away so we that is our "par" score.

Of course, we won't improve/match every result all season but overall we need to be up something like 20 points by the end of the season.

I will try to keep tabs on this after each match.

It shows that in the same games last season we W1 D6 L6 Pts9. If we are just going by time, then by this time last season we had W4 D5 L4 Pts17. This is miles away from our W9 D3 L1 Pts30 this season.

Attendance
This has all been enjoyed by an average of 25,298 supporters at home.

Wrapping it Up
I don't want to bore people with endless stats. So hopefully this is the right balance. If you have any thing you want more detail on, let me know and I'll try and answer in due course.

I’m loving these stats threads - especially as they all show us, by every matrix, to be doing so well.

Very interesting analysis, of course it’s only points that matter but this kind of detail adds hope that we might be top 2 at the end of the season - thanks

Still plenty of time for me to balls up my lead in the predictions competition but I’m quite happy with predicting Argyle to go up automatically because judging by that list, a lot of people had them in mid table.

Forget all the rest. If we finish second, I will laugh (or celebrate at least).
