As Porky the Poet he was often Billy Bragg's support act, and one of the key players in the Red Wedge tours.
He also used to draw cartoons used in fanzines, and Bragg's Back to Basics music books.
More of a compere/MC than a traditional stand up, he got the Buzzcocks gig because of his connections into the Indie Rock world, which makes complete sense, and never let go. As I understand it, the Producers had to put up with a succession of difficult "team captains", hosts and guests, and he was professional, charming and able to smooth things over. He was the glue that held it together.
