Portman Road attendance 20:10 - Oct 22 with 2395 views | DinnernotTea | Does anyone have a clue about how many fans we can actually get into the ground anymore? I know officially it's 29,600 but how the hell were there 1,200 spare seats last night? All 3 PackOutPR games visually when in the ground looks a sell out but then official attendance gets announced as way off 29,600. All a bit weird!

Portman Road attendance on 20:16 - Oct 22 with 2356 views | SitfcB | 29,673 is the new official capacity. Ashton wants to push the safety team to get it to 30,000. With the amount of tickets sold you’re always going to get people that don’t turn up, although I believe they count season ticket holders whatever.

Portman Road attendance on 20:24 - Oct 22 with 2302 views | Ftnfwest | The most recent higher attendance was the 29,005 against Sunderland last season but can’t remember if they used the away section cobbold lower that day or not? Based on what the summer works took away, the capacity then must have been about 29,900. Derby didn’t quite sell out of course last night as well.
Portman Road attendance on 23:39 - Oct 22 with 2034 views | tivo | S block is unused so about 350-400 lost seats. V1, V2 & E blocks are not having the front 5 rows occupied so another 500 plus a perimeter of a few rows around D block (another 50-100 seats). We also have bout 100 seats blocked in SBRL to stop accessible seats views blocked. If MA really wants to get close to 30K without any major development we need to use S block for away fans again and take back E block for home fans. We need to sell the sets in SBRL and move the accessible fans in those seats to any of the other numerous accessible areas around the ground. I would go as far as saying those accessible areas should be removed and filled in with seats as it would allow for an extra 400+ seats in SBRL.

This is it, visually I couldn't see any difference in numbers between them and Portsmouth but they apparently had 200 less fans than Portsmouth. Bring on the 29,000+ one day somehow!

Yes, it's my understanding they count season ticket holders and other ticket holders whatever. I suppose it bumps up the attendance because there were a few empty seats around me on Friday. In the olden days, I believe they counted turnstile clicks which meant the crowd figure was more accurate. They could presumably do the same these days with bar-coded tickets but it seems they don't.

Yeh, I guess it's an advertising thing, it's easier to sell advertising to sponsors if you ramp up your figures I believe Norwich actually include stewards, staff and possibly even the police etc in their figures, such is their hunger for numbers

If 29,673 is currently fine with the safety team, what is it that prevents us from selling all 29,673? I'm sure there must be good reasons, but it does seem baffling when the club is going to great lengths including mass publicity and lowering ticket prices to achieve something they actually won't allow to be achieved, namely to pack out (i.e. actually fill) Portman Road.

Norwich actually, quite uniquely, count the number of fingers to reach their attendance figures.

I think the issue must be the need for a certain number of seats to be kept empty to keep some distance with opposition fans, but if in practice that is the case, why not lower the capacity to reflect this, in which case they would be able to say that they packed out Portman Road. At present the only way to actually pack out Portman Road would be for there to be no opposition fans. But that is never going to be the case, and we probably don't at present have enough of our own fans to do this, relying as we do on away fans for our higher attendances.

The away fans did not appear to be full either.

Ipswich and Norwich in fairness to them, don't actually have particularly big away sections in the grand scheme of things So there are other clubs who can balloon their numbers above ours with larger away followings Geography will play a part there too, with some grounds being more accessible for away fans [Post edited 23 Oct 2022 23:20]

I think they ran out of money or there was not the demand or both. Ashton mentioned more boxes being put in in that radio interview with Bent and Holland on Friday. [Post edited 24 Oct 2022 7:15]
