If anyone can tell me the crud I am watching (Holland / Senegal) remotely comes close for excitement, skill and above all atmosphere then they are nuts. Some on here believe the game is so much more technical nowadays and players from that era would not thrive. Well whatever the truth of that, it was far more bl00dy exciting to watch. Made even better by Mick Mills as captain and my favourite ever player, Mariner, scoring the third. Sorry, don't know how to post link but a quick Youtube search will take you to the 5 minute highlights.

I’m not sure if you are trolling but all the English goals are from utterly abysmal defending, there is literally no one marking anyone or even within 10ft of Robson or Mariner.
Exciting times but I doubt the top teams at WC22 will concede many goals as bad, let alone 2 in a game.
It is more exciting because the players aren't all super fit athletes, and no-one has really done any statistical match number-crunching. It's a bit like formula one used to be more exciting when half the cars would seize up and nobody knew how much their tyres were degrading.

Granted I never saw Peter Shilton in his absolute prime. But in Mexico 86 he was out jumped by a podgy shorty and in Italia 90 I don’t remember him being that great. And in that short video he seemed too slow at going down - was he undroppable?

Shilton was the no.1 choice for years ahead of Ray Clemence and Joe Corrigan. They all seemed to be at their peak at exactly the same time and when Corrigan and Clemence retired, keepers like Chris Woods and Gary Bailey were never quite trusted to take on the mantel. Shilton was certainly past his sell by date at the 1990 World Cup and Seaman gradually became no.1 choice.

Definitely not trolling. Still love the game but for me, it lacks the sheer excitement of the 70s, 80s and even the early 90s, especially at World Cup level.

Not so sure really, WC18 and Euro 20 were up there with any tournament for me. I think when your younger football means more in your life, getting older puts it in perspective for me where England certainly are concerned.

Didn't Shilton and Clemence alternate for years?
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Agree he was well past his best by 86 and especially 90 but from the mid 70s through the early 80s he was simply brilliant. No disrespect to Super Paul Cooper but many ( maybe even Sir Bob too) maintain that had we had Shilton at Town, the League title would have been ours at least once. I believe Sir Bob tried to sign him before Clough landed him for Forest.

They did up until World Cup 82. Shilton played all 5 games in that. In the qualifiers, Shilton played two or three more than Clemence.
I didn't remember that if I'm honest, always preferred Shilton though to be truthfull, one of Clough's masterstrokes.

I will be 95 by then!
Scary thought isn’t it. The ‘82 World Cup is the first one I fully remember (mainly because we didn’t have a Tv in ‘78). I even had the England 82 team wallpaper; such an iconic kit.
It doesn’t seem all that long ago, but project 40 years forward and…gulp! 😳

Tad unfortunate that England failed to qualify for the WC three times during that era you mentioned.
