The attacking players of their golden generation came of age a few years too late for their defence. In 2018 both components were at (or near) their peak and they were the 2nd best team in the tournament, unlucky not to win.
Now Dembele and Kompany have retired and the two ex-Spurs boys at the back aren't quick enough. Hazard and Lukaku are at peak age but can't stay fit so now it's essentially a team of 2 world class players in Courtois and De Bruyne with a mix of talented but not elite young players alongside them. |  |

For the players they have or had in recent tournaments, they are hugely underwhelming as a team. They remind me of our ‘Golden Generation’ of players where we achieved nothing and that’s what will happen with this squad of Belgium players. Under Martinez they really haven’t delivered, I’m not convinced he’s been the right appointment either to get the best out of them. [Post edited 27 Nov 2022 16:13]

They are a medium sized world football power that has had a golden crop of players who are now ageing. Not much quality coming through to replace them. I would expect them to struggle to qualify for 2026 |  |
