So, as the end of the year approaches we tend to find any clear leader continues the momentum to reach promotion. This year may be a littel different with a clear three team group jostling for top spot.
For me:

Automatic: One from Sheff Wed, Plymouth, Ipswich
Runners Up: One form above plus Barnsley, Derby, Bolton
Play Offs: Four from (including above) : Portsmouth

I have a feeling we're going to go out in January and get a striker along with a couple of other key positions and we won't be stopped. Of course it may not work out like that but that's my gut feeling at the moment.

Truly impaired.

Barnsley are finding a bit of form. I know people tend to look at form over 6 games but they've gained 6 points on us in the last 4. Still a 9 point cushion which I would imagine (hope) will be too much on a side accruing as many points as I expect us to in the 2nd half of the season, and of course they'll hit a patch of less impressive results like everyone will.

We're in a good spot, we've lost less than any side in the division. Just a couple of frustrating draws of late but nothing to get too concerned with at this stage. Saturday was bl00dy annoying though, couldn't believe what I was seeing. 90+6 ffs.

Horse race? They're not even horses!

Hard to look past the top 3 at the moment. For the playoffs, there's often a team that rises from mid-table in the second half of the season. There's only 6 points between Oxford for example in 14th and 6th place, and they're in a decent run of form.

Barnsley have played all of the top 7 away from home, and none of them at home yet so they look the one team that could catch up with the top 3

I still expect Plymouth to fall away a bit and Ips and SW just to keep relentlessly going to get north of 90 points

I would make that the most likely scenario. I think Plymouth are a little thinner on the ground, somewhat exposed to loan players being recalled and don't appear to have pockets as deep as us or Wednesday to turn the screw in January. Our squad depth, especially once Evans, Aluko et al get fit will be very handy in the second half of the season when legs get heavy, and I wouldn't be surprised if we're 6+ points above Plymouth by May.

Ourselves and Sheff Wed have a little more of a fear factor about us too, it's not always a good thing as sides come and park the bus but it probably does help insulate us from too many home defeats that might perpetuate a more emphatic sequence of negative results. I can't see a world where we lose 2-0 at home to Port Vale for example.

Despite the recent frustrating results I think Plymouth are showing more signs of a wobble than we are plus their away form is indifferent and they still have quite a few tricky away ties to come (including us and Wednesday). I know we do as well but we have the best away record in the division and look stronger there than we do at home currently.

An injury to Bannan aside I can't see Wednesday doing anything other than continuing to plug away picking up points at the same rate as us.

if any teams are going to make a run to upset the top 3 then I'd be backing Barnsley and Bolton - both solid squads and Bolton in particular have a knack of having very strong 2nd halves to a season.

They've managed to end up with a few games in hand on everyone but I don't see Portsmouth as much of a threat (which is perhaps brave to say not long before we play them with their currently in tact unbeaten home record). More likely imo that someone like an Oxford or a Lincoln put together a good run of results to sneak in.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Barnsley are 9 points behind, albeit with a game in hand. They can only catch is if we slip up badly and they go on a 2+ point a game run. Same with Derby Bolton, Pompey, Peterborough etc. I just can't see any of them catching us.

Its a 3 horse race for the top 2, but whoever finishes 3rd will probably miss out in the play offs. Let's just make sure it's not us.

I think January 2023 will be the opposite of January 2015 & the owners will give McKenna what he needs to help Town make the top 2. If ever there was a time for Marcus Evans to invest, it was January 2015, but we scratched around for a few pick-ups, of whom only Sears did much. Apparently though, Mick told Evans he didn't want to disrupt the team with new signings. We'll never know, although I think a Mick-led Town would have been quickly relegated from the Premier League.

I know it sounds arrogant because we need to get there first, but I just hope any January permanent signings are with a view to the Championship next year. I'm sure we can bolster the numbers with loanees.

Wycombe are another team that seem to be putting a run together, and might be difficult to stop once they get into the top 6. It's a shame we haven't already played them, tbh

They gained 6 points on us in the last 4 but none on us in the last 6. So, in 2 matches we opened up a 6 point bigger gap that it has taken them 4 matches to simply claw that back again.

As long as we keep going at the rate we are, we will be fine. We only need to match the record of Wednesday and can afford to do slightly worse than all those below them.

It is down to us maintaining our form.
