I had a fox go through my front garden the other night. Looked quite majestic trotting through the snow. I don’t think it was an indication of spring.

It was this poem that first (in my late 20s) really got me into loving poetry -

“The thought fox” by Ted Hughes

I imagine this midnight moment‟s forest:
Something else is alive
Beside the clock‟s loneliness
And this blank page where my fingers move.

Through the window I see no star:
Something more near
Though deeper within darkness
Is entering the loneliness:

Cold, delicately as the dark snow,
A fox‟s nose touches twig, leaf;
Two eyes serve a movement, that now
And again now, and now, and now

Sets neat prints into the snow
Between trees, and warily a lame
Shadow lags by stump and in hollow
Of a body that is bold to come

Across clearings, an eye,
A widening deepening greenness,
Brilliantly, concentratedly,
Coming about its own business
Till, with a sudden sharp hot stink of fox
It enters the dark hole of the head.
The window is starless still; the clock ticks,
The page is printed.

The while situation isnt helped by the fact its only her car that has been attached leading to two comments

1, why it my car, it int funny
2, have you trained them to just eat the cables on my car ..... (as if I would do that.....)

When I lived out in the wilds of the Orkney Islands 30 years ago, I had a major problem with my old Volvo not starting - cue the local garage traipsing out at least twice to try different things, including a new battery - nothing worked.

They eventually found a rat had been nesting under the bonnet & had chewed right through the battery cable. The little (big) s**t.

The one thing I have noticed is the number of Blackcaps that are now over wintering in the UK. There was always a small population in the South West in the cold months, but I have seen so many photos from people enquiring as to what these pretty birds are. I also gather there are Willow Warblers over wintering too.

Global warming.

Just had a male blackcap in my front garden. I think it might have been attracted to the christmas lights which are in the style of red berries.
