It was this poem that first (in my late 20s) really got me into loving poetry -
“The thought fox” by Ted Hughes
I imagine this midnight moment‟s forest:
Something else is alive
Beside the clock‟s loneliness
And this blank page where my fingers move.
Through the window I see no star:
Something more near
Though deeper within darkness
Is entering the loneliness:
Cold, delicately as the dark snow,
A fox‟s nose touches twig, leaf;
Two eyes serve a movement, that now
And again now, and now, and now
Sets neat prints into the snow
Between trees, and warily a lame

When I lived out in the wilds of the Orkney Islands 30 years ago, I had a major problem with my old Volvo not starting - cue the local garage traipsing out at least twice to try different things, including a new battery - nothing worked.
They eventually found a rat had been nesting under the bonnet & had chewed right through the battery cable. The little (big) s**t. [Post edited 20 Dec 2022 12:01]

The one thing I have noticed is the number of Blackcaps that are now over wintering in the UK. There was always a small population in the South West in the cold months, but I have seen so many photos from people enquiring as to what these pretty birds are. I also gather there are Willow Warblers over wintering too.

Just had a male blackcap in my front garden. I think it might have been attracted to the christmas lights which are in the style of red berries. | |
