Never been before. The acropolis is high on my bucket list. My son has expressed a very healthy interest in ancient history so we’re looking to go and visit in October for 3or 4 days.
Any advice on the best area of the city to stay, apartment wise, that is walkable to the main sights and has a more traditional Greek feel to it. Love the food so would like to be near some proper authentic tavernas etc.
Ta In advance.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Great choice! There is also the Temple of Zeus, changing of the guard, lovey park, Pireas for a trip to the sea! Food is great and cheap by European capital standards. Would love to go back.

I can’t remember where I stayed but it’s reasonably compact compared to say London or Paris.

Just a heads up, the Greek authorities approved a load of work to the whole site a couple of years back that was delayed and a friend that visited last year said there’s a lot of scaffolding and other unsightly stuff that does not lend well to the aesthetics, might be worth trying to find out when the works are to be completed before visiting?

*Edit, it wasn’t last year, it was 2021, still struggling with the whole 2023 thing apparently

If there's specific things of historical or cultural interest you want to see then no doubt you'll have a great time. Personally I found 3 days to be enough for what I wanted to do, not being a big history buff I of course took an interest in the acropolis, parthenon etc but I'm not the sort of person to need hours there. I went more for just a city break really and had a good time, but there were areas of Athens that were really grotty by anyone's standards and aspects I was a bit underwhelmed by. On that basis as purely a city break destination it's not somewhere I would go back to but also I think my tastes are changing slightly and cities appeal less than they did before. I've lived in them most of my life which is perhaps the reason but I would take a rural area over a city now for a break, and dip into the city for day trips. Like I say that's just me and if there's things you specifically want to see in Athens then you'll, of course, only see them there.

It was very affordable compared to our standards which is nice when going out to eat or drink etc. Monastiraki was a nice area, there was a food market there which was cool to stroll around.

My son did Ancient History at Exeter, and I took him to Athens 4 years ago. We went in late April which was a great time - it gets too hot in the summer months. We stayed at the Melia hotel which was superbly located. Room was small, but there is a great little roof top pool with a direct view to the Acropolis. The Museum at the Acropolis is absolutely superb. The hotel was also very close to the National Archaeological museum, which was also excellent. Loads of good eateries everywhere.
We try to do a city break each year with the (grown up) kids and Athens is the best so far!

Big fan of Athens, went a few years ago for a week and had a great time! We stayed in a lovely Airbnb in the Exarcheia district, which we later found out is an anarchist area and there happened to be a riot on while we were there. I think the timing was unlucky but I wouldn't recommend that area as trying to make your way home through tear gas isn't fun.

Watch the soldiers "changing guard" outside the government building. Very amusing.
Catch one of the frequent ferries from Piraeus to one of the islands close by. Nice trip and instant change from city to rural Greece.
Watch out for pickpockets, especially on the underground. Worse than Barcelona!
Last time we went we got an AirBnB very close to Syntagma Square.

I finished the marathon at the original olympic stadium, the Panathenaic Stadium. I'm assuming you can run around the track on normal days, it's a good fun place to visit

From the four days I spent there a few years ago I have to say that I found the city very run down . Largely due, I suppose, to the economic crisis they endured. Obviously, if you are going to see the ancient monuments etc. they are still very much worth going for.
