I think you'll find that none of the reviews into Russian interference in the EU referendum raised any Red flags. The key word is 'none' as in number of reviews = none.

Indeed, all very surprising given that it's fairly well known there has been a battle going on in cyberspace with Russia for a long time

CCHQ have made the following very clear. Russia have not influenced any election that the Tories have won. Russian Oligarchs money donated to the Tory party is legit and no corruption or money laundering took place. The BBC is a full of Communists and Marxists whereas Russia is not. The Tories have no influence over the BBC. Russia has no influence over the Tory party. Is that the Tory Party chairman I see running down the street with his pants on fire.

Doing so is pretty well why MI5 exists. They'll have files on all cabinet ministers and most MPs. Anybody viewed as 'subversive' or potentially so will be risk assessed. Before the numbers became too large to cope with, and when the students were perceived as a bunch of loony lefties, all those going to university would have a file opened on them. When GCHQ are looking at the brightest and best languages and computing graduates, MI5 will tell them who to forget about even before kicking off the stringent vetting process. And of course strikes, new age hippies, extinction rebellion, the far right, the far left, insulate Britain and Town's Official Independent Supporters' Club will all have MI5 assets in place.
