FA Cup Final v Eurovision Song contest 09:17 - Mar 21 with 1365 views | norfsufblue | For those old enough to remember.... it seems that as an event these two have swapped priority... Cup Final no longer really talked about till day of match and Eurovision wall to wall coverage for the week( at least!) leading to the competition. Illustrates what a complete mess the FA have made of managing the nations showpiece event of the year!
FA Cup Final v Eurovision Song contest on 09:36 - Mar 21 with 1295 views | Churchman | They’ve destroyed the FA Cup. The BBC try and big it up because they’ve got zippo to show, but the reality is that it’s a rubber bone competition. Yes, Sheffield United will be relishing their Wembley semi final. Wouldn’t we all. Would they swap it with promotion? Nope. Brighton will be looking forward to theirs. Would the swap it with the chance to play in Europe next year with a higher PL finish? No. The FA Cup rarely has the bigger clubs playing first teams until the later rounds. Clubs in L1 even use it as an opportunity to play fringe players some of the time. What it was is in the bin. Thanks FA. Job well done.
FA Cup Final v Eurovision Song contest on 09:38 - Mar 21 with 1287 views | bournemouthblue | What are the main factors in it's decline? Sky? The Premier League The Champions League? An oversaturation of European football with the Europa and Conference Leagues?

The money from the Premier League has made the focus of promotion so much more crucial It's the same for the Champions League spots really, the big prize now isn't really the FA Cup unless they simply gave the 4th place spot to the winners The FA Cup is probably more appealing to National League, League Two and One sides, very rarely are Championship clubs all that bothered by it

I think numerous things have reduced the importance of the FA cup but really it is all down to money. The Premier League (and CHampions league/Europe) have ruined it. Teams see 4th place as a better achievement..... The only solution would be to make the 4th Champions league spot the FA Cup winners......which of course the Premier League would never agreee with! haha

I suppose that's one of the problems with taking the Premier League outside FA control? I can't see an extra spark being added to it, without some element of reform, whatever that proves to be, playing too many games seems to be a regular moan from English clubs You could completely scrap the League cup, I'm not sure really what it adds and have league cups or a football league cup/EFL cup alternatively

Definitely scrap the League Cup or else use it to replace the EFL Trophy & include everyone apart from clubs which are in Europe. This also mkight help the FA Cup. The biggest problem for the FA Cup has been the rise in importance of the Champions' League plus the huge money available just for staying in the PL, The FA can't change those 2 things, but some of the following might help: No other games held on FA Cup Fianl day. Semi finals not at Wembley but sensible other neutral grounds. Draw held at a fixed time/date, but AFTER all the previous rounds have been played. Fewer games live on TV. All others to be played on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm, unless a clash e.g. both Sheffield clubs at home. No moving of kick-offs for "overseas TV rights". Scrap all replays. THe idea that you will see a result at the first game might encourage more fans to attend & makes a giant killing more likely. Go back to regionalising the 1st & 2nd rounds between North & South. Little local derbies create more interest & cut down on expenses for small clubs & fans. Some of these ideas will reduce the income derived from the competition, but restoring a little prestige might be worth it.

There’s football on TV almost every day now. No game really seems special any more. Back in the day the FA Cup final was the ONLY live televised game. Incredible really.

Yes, that & the England v Scotland game, which also seemed to take on much greater significance than it deserved (unless you were a Scot).

Scandinavia had live English football long before England did, hence so many Scandi Town fans.

But in the UK, a very high percentage of televised football is only available via subscription. In this regard, people aren’t forced to watch it. The notion of only special matches being screened has been outdated for a long time. But I would say that a live match screened live on BBC or ITV is still a tad special because it happens quite infrequently. And a fair few of these matches are on the iplayer or ITV4.

These are good ideas. To me the semi finals being played at Wembley is the biggest killer. The old neutral grounds added to the magic. Imagine a semi at Old Trafford and another at Spurs’ ground. Could be completely regionalised.

I think that I’m in the minority as I don’t mind the semi-finals being played at Wembley. I don’t want to sound confrontational but once the genie has been let out then it’ll almost be impossible to go back. Live matches for both the domestic and international audiences is where most of the money is generated. And it’s what buys clubs nice things like better facilities and better players. I think that having less matches live on telly will be almost impractical now to impose.
