Wow, 8 game ban for Mitrovic 17:18 - Apr 4 with 1379 viewsIllinoisblue

And FA appealing because they don’t think it’s long enough. What did he do, murder the ref and burn his house down?

And the example is easier to set when a player plays for Fulham and not a Man City or Arsenal.

A tad harsh from an individual point of view but it's 100% the right thing to do.

Players know you can't touch the ref and the knock on effect down in grassroots game is clear. There is some really disgusting incidents now up and down the country and stuff like this in the pro game has to have zero tolerance.

That horse has long bolted (as you say by reference to the horrible incidents that happen at grass roots). I can’t help but feel that the bar is too high though - the FA could properly stamp down on dissent and launch initiatives in support of officials if they really wanted to. They could get clubs doing more around the fans, for example, as it’s not just about players. I wouldn’t have thought this ban, although justified, is going to make any difference at grass roots level.

The horse may have bolted long ago, but that doesn't mean a bad situation should be allowed to continue unchecked.

Rules should be introduced that mean a yellow for screaming at the Ref and, ideally, only the Captain is allowed to speak to him at all unless directly addressed by the match official. Players will have to learn some self-discipline (as other sportspeople are expected to display).

It's been allowed to really get out of control but can't just give up on it. The cameras is a good initiative. It's the cases of grown adults shouting absolute filth a d 14/15 year old refs at youth level. What level of vermin do you have to be. There was a case here locally with a friends of a friends son who was a young teenager reffing. The dad asked them to stop and the swore and shouted abuse at him and told him the kid should t ref if he can't take it or he shouldn't be so $h#t. Disgusting.

I was listening on the radio and they had Hackett on representing refs and he was really unhappy at how lenient the ban was. Sending out completely wrong message. To be honest it feels about right to me but defo not less. It's not hard to not touch the ref and and scream I'm his face is it.

Why should the captain even be allowed to "speak to" the ref? In all other sports, questioning the referee's decision is dissent and has some punishment.

The problem is after years of Roy and his mates, then Keown et al at the two biggest clubs at the time normalising the hunting refs in packs spectacle we no longer see it as a problem.

Mitrovic was stupid, I did think they might ban him for the rest of the season or something equally high profile.

There are too many gimmicks and fads in the past 20 years - six second rule, moving free kicks for dissent etc. that I think no one would take a hard line approach seriously for very long.

You'd need a system where refs are mic'ed up and dialogue is used in analysis to bridge that gap with fans and the media. Likewise VAR should be the domain of the people in the VAR room, handing the decision back to the ref completely undoes the point of it and puts the onus on them.

In Rugby, the Captain is allowed to speak to the Ref. That's as in pointing things out to the official and asking him questions, not shouting or offering dissent (the latter results in free kicks/penalties being marched forwards an extra 10 metres).

I don't think it's unreasonable to have some conduit for the team to express themselves (politely) to the Ref. It's the manner in which it happens in football at the moment that is the problem.

Altho on your last point, think it works pretty well in Rugby, where the TV Official (VAR equivalent) points stuff out to the Ref using replays on the big screen, with the latter then making the actual decision based on their advice. Has the advantage of letting the crowd see what's being looked at while the process is going on.
