Is this the most lopsided L1 season ever? 16:13 - Apr 17 with 1605 views | Illinoisblue | Must admit never paid much attention until we were in it and the covid years are a bit of a blur. But to have us and Sheff Weds and Derby pulling in over 25k a game, Bolton, Pompey, Barnsley, Plymouth all doing 15k+, and then… it really tails off. Some mid size clubs like Oxford, Wycombe, Vale, Charlton, Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury etc. Then a bunch of what are essentially massively overachieving non league clubs. Maybe it was always like this and I just never noticed.

Is this the most lopsided L1 season ever? on 16:51 - Apr 17 with 1417 views | jayessess | A think there's a historically unusual number of well-supported clubs in League One and a corresponding number of poorly-supported ones in the Championship right now. The season we got relegated from the Championship the average attendance of all matches was 20,181, it's currently 18,619. That same year, League One's average was 8,741, compared to this year's 10,644. I do wonder if it's part of a longer term trend - where attendances are less and less relevant to how competitive you are.

Yes, you look at small championship teams such as Preston, Luton, Milwall, Blackburn, with crowds half our size and they’re all competitive this year. Obviously they’re not paying peanuts in wages, but still). It does seem that parachute payments are less of a guarantee for relegated teams to do well. Neither budgies or Watford or west brom have shone this year. I’m not really sure what my point was other than, please, for the love of god, can we please go up this year.

Is this the most lopsided L1 season ever? on 17:03 - Apr 17 with 1357 views | Hipsterectomy | If Bradford come up they'll probably get around 25,000 I assume Leyton will sell out so around 10,000. Stockport get huge crowds as well for their recent success, over 10,000 It's crazy that teams such as Charlton may actually end up with less crowds than these next year. Pompey attendances are also on the decline after almost a decade in this league

Two things. Firstly as long as concentration is kept to a max and we perform as we have done then we will get automatic promotion. We are as the saying goes"In the driving seat" we are a point in front of Wednesday with a game in hand. Whereas at one stage we couldn't afford to drop any points in the next five it now means they cannot afford to slip up. I do think Plymouth will drop points tomorrow at Lincoln. Not sure about Wednesday. The form they are in they could conceivable drop more points tomorrow. It is in our hands. Secondly assuming we do get promoted and achieve Premier League status in the next season or two I do not want as being a yo-yo club. Last time under Burley we finished 5th in the first season, built the North and Churchmans to as it is now. Got relegated and went into administration. But I am sure with MvKenna and Co at the helm developement of the ground and playing staff will be handled just as well as they have done this season.

And pretty disrespectful to them too. Cheltenham are in constant competition with Gloucester Rugby just down the road. Fleetwood is, well, Fleetwood. Burton are in a fight with Sturke for supporters. Forest Green are in the middle of nowhere on top of a hill, in a village. and Accrington are right in between now Premier League Burnley and Hoping to be Premier League Blackburn.

Massively overachieving is a compliment; Accrington, Morecambe, FGR, Burton all doing incredibly well for their size and finances. Plenty of clubs in L2 and lower who would love some of what they’ve had the last few years.

Overachieving is a compliment, calling them 'Non-League' clubs, is not.

But also further evidence of that disconnect between support base and league status. There's 6 teams in L1 with attendances lower than the L2 average (despite the advantage of bigger away followings), two of them get fewer through the doors than the National League average.

They're a Football League village team on top of a hill.

The term non-league is so outdated and often used these days to show disrespect to other clubs. It used to be that the Football League was The league and anything else was correctly non-league. That changed in 1992 when the FL lost it's top division. We now have the pyramid, one of the great things about English football. Every club plays in a league, and respect is due any club that progresses in the system and gets to play us on the same level. We're both there on playing merit, which is all that matters.

I doubt Orient will sell out. In League 1 they tend to get 5 or 6 thousand, https://www.transfermarkt.com/leyton-orient/besucherzahlenentwicklung/verein/115 [Post edited 17 Apr 2023 18:39]
