What difference will 9 subs make 11:29 - Jun 30 with 1790 viewsPinewoodblue

If you exclude underage players if everyone is fit only 5 players don’t make the match day squad.

Do we need a couple more underage players, in addition to Humphreys & Baggott, so we can fill the bench to cover injuries/suspensions?

Assume our 3rd choice keeper would be one of the 5 to miss out. Of the current 25 who else misses the match day cut?

I don't understand the need to have 9 subs, to be honest. Same with one of the European competitions - as well as Serie A, they name 12 subs! Seems totally pointless to me.

I would imagine it is good news for players like Leigh and Humphreys who could often feel slightly hard done by to be left out last season. All being well you're gonna be taking something like a goalie, a centre back, two full backs, two midfielders and three forwards.

JD would be the first name on my bench every week. Hard to go far beyond that because there is so much time left in the window.

Don't they limit how many of the subs can warm up pitch-side at a time? If not, they would have to start doing so.

The one benefit would be that you can name plenty of cover for every area of the pitch (provided you have the players to name) and include inexperienced options too. That way, if a match is won and you want to give a youngster a taste of matchday action or start giving them 10-15 minutes, you can. It would be things like that which might change. Overall, it would benefit clubs with bigger squads - mainly the richer clubs.

Difference? A lot less space on the subs bench I would imagine!

More bench options will benefit teams with deeper squads.. Plus the extra two places could also give an opportunity to include a youngster here and there, to get them integrated into the whole, first team, experience, to aid their development..
Will also make fringe players feel more a part of the first team, if they are named on the bench more often, imo.... Quite a few benefits for me.

Actually, it is a bit. On the occasions when I've needed to move my season ticket because of family coming to the game, we've sometimes had little choice but the lowest tier in Magnus West. And fine and fratenal though it be, that old footballing colleagues agree to go to the corner flag for a great reunion, even more of them would then constitute a further difficulty for littl'uns.

Even if players were only allowed out a few at a time, that would just mean that a greater length of the game was marred by an impaired view down there.

It helps KMcK with squad rotation. For us it means two outfield subs from five after we’ve swapped our three attackers. When there was talk of redeveloping the areas around the ground, I did suggest a warm-up area away from the pitch. It would be even more relevant now.

At this point they might as well just tell teams they can sub in anyone with a squad place if they want, like at international tournaments.

I suppose 5 absences isn't that many, so a couple of U21s might be helpful.

I always thought for competitive games these days you were only allowed 3 subs max warming up at one time during a game? Maybe wrong...

Imagine trying to have 9 subs on the bench towards the end of Lamberk's reign... we really might have seen Sheeran on the bench at that point (if he was the sponsor)
