when a close family member is going down Twitter rabbit holes and becoming increasingly racist/delusional?

Difficult. My dad went the same way from the Daily Mail. We couldn’t do anything except avoid any of the subjects he was told to be outraged about. It worked to a degree, but maybe someone has some better ideas.

I've never really used Twitter that much but lately i've had the occasional look. It has really surprised me how much genuinely hateful stuff is posted. People definitely getting braver (for want of a better word) posting their views.

Truly impaired.

Yeah, for sure Twitter has gotten worse in recent times, particularly since it was taken over by Elon Musk. Lots of blatantly hateful stuff being openly posted on there on a daily basis. I'd say it's the most toxic social media platform by some distance at the moment

Get both The Daily Mail and The Morning Star delivered and then swap over the outside pages ?

There's not much you can do. One of my male relatives has gone this way.

Even to the point of questioning the holocaust. Which ended any conversation I had with him.

He was always a bit of a rightie but has now gone 'rogue. He told me before that, that King Arthur would return one day to save the country. I said it would be unlikely as he was a fictional character so could not 'come back'. Whereupon, he challenged me as to how I know he was a fictional character.

It was this idiotic over confidence in his method of arguing that got to me. Like engaging with a child who asks why everytime you explain something.

I expect in his mind he has 'seen the light'. Though I suspect in my relatives case, his discovering ;weed' at a late age has played a part. Pubs closed during the pandemic.

I wonder how much is down to the rightie inferiority complex that requires them to align themselves with something/one more powerful, to compensate for their inadequacies.

While not as dangerous, Jehovahs Witnesses and sundry other cranks follow much the same line. Almost complete suspension of rational thought so as to have life wrapped up in ludicrous certainties.

With all the benefits the internet brings, there is this downside. And democracies require that such people have the right to be rightwing fruitcakes. Such is the price etc

A long-time friend of mine went a similar way on fb.

Her rants were such that after a while I got the strong impression they were actually down to Alzheimer's, or other similarly increasing dementia. Incredibly sad; nothing to be done.

Who’d have thought a social media platform owned by someone so bigoted and nasty, would end up full of people that are bigoted and nasty.

Unfortunately, they're unlikely to go back the other way. Getting out of the rabbit hole once you're in it is challenging, especially if they don't want to engage critically.

You can either choose just not to engage in the subjects (something I do at a much less serious level with Brexit and "woke" with my parents) or just reduce your time with them.

Across the pond, lots of people had this issue with QAnon and their family members going completely off the rails.

There was one horrific incident where a young girl posted on Reddit that her father murdered her mother, injured her sister and killed their dog.

Not even the only time this sort of thing happened either.

I wonder how much of the market Threads will capture. It’s supposed to be aiming to be a nicer place https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/jul/06/mark-zuckerberg-uses-threads-

It’d be hilarious if it supersedes Twitter completely. Although that’s a battle I’d be happy for them both to lose.

I would suggest the only thing to do is tell them straight and start by saying you're worried about them.... just be honest an point them to research to back up your statements.

It probably won't work, but at least your conscience will be clear if you have to cut off / reduce contact.

He got rid of most of Twitter's moderating staff, so it's no surprise it's gone downhill.

As ever though, it depends who you follow. I find facebook, far, far worse - much more toxic & hate-filled. Use it as little as poss but is essential for a few individual friends & a couple of groups.
