Probably also a result of missing pre season with the injury he carried through, as you say it showed, if JD had not got himself injured HC would still be on the bench in all probability.

Being held together with gaffer tape at the moment. If Janoi is fit and ready he’ll go under the knife.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Looked good going forward, as he did vs QPR.

1 v 1, his movement sideways and backwards doesn't look sharp, which would suggest he isn't quite fit.

Achilles injuries are a nightmare to manage. Luckily we have a 2 week break now.

He struggled positionally, as he did against Leeds. Suggests to me it’s not necessarily fitness related but tactically. We need to remember he’s actually incredibly raw, both in terms of senior football and defensive experience more generally. He’s one for the future for sure, he has all the physical attributes needed and there’s a lot he does well, but at this level his frailties will be and have been so much more ruthlessly exposed than last season. I wasn’t very impressed with him defensively in L1, but his remit was quite different against a Forest Green than it’s likely to be against Championship opposition.

I still think he’s destined to be a centre half in time, but I would take him out of the firing line at the moment and let him keep developing. A good opportunity to have 2 weeks on the training ground with Williams and introduce him from the start at Hillsbrough IMO. Give him a chance to make that role his own, he’s looked better with each appearance and that’s natural given he’s played so little football. I would also hand the baton over from Luongo to Taylor. That doesn’t spell the end of Luongo, but it feels right. I’ve been impressed with his cameos off the bench, he brings a lot of energy and an archetypal box to box midfielder.

Williams Woofenden Tuanzebe Davis
Morsy Taylor
Burns Chaplin Broadhead
Hirst

With Hutchinson, Scarlett, Burgess, Clarke, Ladapo, Luongo, Jackson et al as bench options works for me.

I assume his positioning is what McKenna wants and with the assymetrical formation we have it is going to have a weak spot and it’s there where he is expected to cover so much ground defensively.

Think his main issue is when he is engaging defensively he’s not stopping his man or stopping the cross and ends up a bit of a training cone when he does get across and into position

That's also how i see our eleven eventually becoming, if Tuanzebe signs.

While Luongo might not have the same technical qualities as Taylor, Mass and Morsy do so much in terms of nullifying opposition players and systems. I think they provide a huge platform for Broadhead, Chaplin and Burns to essentially roam and focus on providing an attacking threat. If we were to swap Luongo with Taylor, i fear that might place a greater load on Morsy and open us up a little more.

There were a number of occasions where Woolf is telling him to get wider, closer to his man. His reaction after the 1st goal was pretty telling as well, they broke quickly but the amount of times Clarke gets sucked to the ball is ridiculous. He often has the pace to get himself out of jail but he’s been found wanting on too many occasions. As you say when he has recovered his position he’s been on his heels, far too easy to get balls in to the box as with their opener yesterday, and Leeds 2nd and 3rd. A very unpopular opinion but I honestly just don’t think he’s ready. Not a criticism of him per se, i think he’ll come good in time.

I don’t think we need wholesale changes defensively or a root and branch destruction, but it’s defiantly a cause for concern.

The asymmetrical hypothesis falls down as on the right we have Clarke and Burns. Therefore Clarke is able to cover the full back more easily than Davis, but isn’t up to it defensively right now. He’s continually get caught out despite having cover ahead of him. But Davis doesn’t have that same cover, is constantly our teams outlet (especially against Cardiff on Sat) and yet is not constantly caught out of position. If it was David being caught out you could blame the asymmetrical shape but our shape should help Clarke more than hinder him.

I think he doesn't want to get too tight, probably because he doesn't want to have to turn.

But you are not stating the roles they play - Davis plays as a LWB and Burgess plays as the LCB, whereas Clarke plays as the RCB and the RB.

Davis comes back to support Burgess when the ball goes in behind him, whereas Clarke doesn't have that same support from Burns.

Made a simular point in one of the other Clarke threads at the weekend. He didn't have his best game, but he is left exposed an awful lot by our formation and attacking play.
