George Burley - Reflection 14:11 - Aug 11 with 1161 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | It’s always great to hear from George Burley, genuinely our third best manager which is no shame as he’s behind Ramsay and Robson! All managed their country too! Looking back, I know we had a disastrous start to the 2002/3 season but in hindsight it would have probably been better to have allowed Burley to fix the mess. He should have been given a bit more time, I doubt we’d have been relegated again. I think the biggest issue he had is while he had lost some quarters of the dressing room, the banks had already moved in and were beginning to auction off players at very low values, nobody knew who was going to be there by season end, so how can anyone mount a promotion push with that going on in the background? Nobody knew what was going to happen. It was an impossible task. Credit to Burley for recommending Joe Royle to come in though, a good manager stifled by the lack of resourced and got blood out of stones during his tenure. Lets not forget that Joes best players were largely those brought in or through by Burley in Richards, Naylor, Westlake, Wilnis, Magic, Miller, Wright, Counago and Bowditch.

Bit harsh to blame the banks for that.

There were a few things not great at the time but losing Dale Roberts was the big one. Edit - and the international break after getting stuffed by Liverpool [Post edited 11 Aug 2023 15:24]

Footballer in ‘looking after the interests of his family’ shocker.
George Burley - Reflection on 15:33 - Aug 11 with 849 views | LA_Tractor_Boy | Getting relegated from the PL in 2002 was such a sliding doors moment. Even if we'd been relegated the following season, we probably wouldn't have gone into administration, Evans wouldn't have bought us and driven the club into the ground and there would be no Gamechanger. It's a funny old game...

Saying George Burley destroyed the club twice is a bit harsh - but I see where you’re coming from

This is the artist formerly known as NerdyKnowAll and VoiceOfReason. He hates Burley so much we even had a Burley Appreciation day in his honour some years ago.

Er, they’d have made more money making a higher profile move.
