U.K. Cities Ending in Vowels (Quiz) 18:30 - Aug 8 with 4683 viewsMiaow

I’ve just put together this three-minute quiz if anybody would like a go.

There are nine cities in Britain with names that end in a vowel (excluding ‘Y’). It may be helpful to think of the full names of some cities.

Thanks again for having a look.

I had no idea the the official name of the city for the first one was that.

As for the one currently on 6% I can see why hardly anyone is getting that

Only full names are counted, so Stoke-on-Trent doesn’t get in there.

On the flip side, there is one place on the list that has a suffix which ends with a vowel but which is usually referred to by its shorter name that doesn’t end in a vowel.

Why on earth is Southend a city?

Essex didn’t have any cities at all until 2012 but it is now one of five ceremonial counties of England that have three each, alongside Cambridgeshire, Hampshire, the West Midlands and West Yorkshire.

And Ipswich still isn’t a city. If Colchester and Chelmsford are, then I think Ipswich should be too. And there’s no risk of the club changing its name if that did happen, especially seeing as they’ve gone for the name “TownTV”.

On that note, another station that doesn’t seem to be changing its name is Braintree Freeport despite the fact it now serves “Braintree Village”.

6/9 so not too shabby really. Might have got one more with more time but that was harder than I thought it would be. Thanks!

Cheers again!

That’s a good score - the average is 4/9.

I did wonder if I’d allowed for enough time but I suppose it makes it a bit of a challenge.

I can't believe I missed the 4th English one as my family hails from there. I'd never have got the second Scottish one - I didn't even know it was a city.

While Chelmsford was only given City status in 2012, the local football club had been called "Chelmsford City" since 1938, when they turned professional & joined the Southern League.

Yes, that seemed a bit odd to me when I was younger, and it has had its cathedral for a number of years - it seems like there aren’t any truly defined rules for being a city. Cambridge has no cathedral and gained city status in the early ‘50s, Colchester has no cathedral but is now also a city, and Bury has a cathedral but is not a city. Those places with cathedrals that were established centuries ago tend to all be cities.

And it seems like Chelmsford copied us in turning professional! Just two years later. I know that our decision to do that led to the demise of Colchester Town and the formation of United.

I think there may be one or two other clubs in England that have ’City’ in their name but that aren’t located in cities. There is definitely one in Scotland - Elgin City in the town of Elgin (a quick look at Wikipedia has just told me that it used to be a cathedral city).
