90s loan time periods 08:32 - Sep 10 with 1807 viewsJeff_winger

I might be remembering this wrong, but I'm sure loan's in the 90s tended to be 1 month at time?

I don't remember half season or season long loans being a thing?

Can anyone remember a loan that lasted more than a month to three months?

For example my memory of Harewood was he came for 4 weeks, missed an open goal from on the goal line and then went back to Nottingham where he suddenly played awesome

Loans were also much rarer back then. None of this try before you buy malarkey.

Yes, but then there was no transfer window back then, just a Spring deadline. Transfer windows changed the rules for loans.

Burley's record on loanees was really very mixed, some outstanding players and some dross.

Not true either, Jamie Clapham and Martijn Reuser both came on loan initially for example.

One I remember very clearly was Niklas Gudmundsson, who came in from Blackburn very late in the season. (And was close to being a hero, if I remember rightly.)

Loans seemed to be used then to fill in for just a few weeks while a specific player was out. I remember seeing Stein, Jonathan Hunt and Vernazza come in for very short spells amongst probably others.

That was when the EFL was able to dictate loan spells, what became known as short-term loans as opposed to long-term window-to-window loans. They were abolished in about 2017, something like that.

My memory is a bit sketchy but I think loans became more common once reserve teams were scrapped. I remember seeing some big names getting pitch time in the reserves after just signing or coming back from injury. There were some decent crowds too. U23 teams were allowed a couple of over-age players but apart from that there weren’t many opportunities to get competitive minutes.

Didnt he miss an open goal against Man City? up there with Harewood hitting the post against Oxford from 3 yards when the ball was on it's way in
