Anybody think he might leave in Jan? Be a shame if we can't persuade him to join staff but if he wants to play he would have to move.

Be perfect for Oxford again!

Judging by his media interview since the season started he knew exactly what he was signing up for. Seems to be highly valued by McKenna and is a bridge between the squad and the coaching staff in a way that Morsy isn't i.e. provides feedback to the coaching staff on each training session.

We're also only an injury or two away from him being a regular matchday squad/'finisher'.

Can't see it. I hope he'll keep signing for a year until he decides to go into coaching.

His role is beyond a playing role now and he's still silky and reads the game, having him available to come in, in a crisis is well worthwhile

Think KM sees him more of a coach than player. Expect him to join the back room team after playing career.

He's great to have around and valuable contributor but he did saying interview before season that he still wants to play. That's the head scratcher really.

Really like Aluko, and taking selfish cap off it does seem a shame that he isn't playing football as he still looked in fantastic nick in pre-season.

Of course, but Aluko wanted to play.

Turning 35 in February, if he wanted to play it would very much likely be turning to the lower leagues where he is unlikely to learn anything to help his coaching aspirations. Even Col Utd may be a stretch and they could be once bitten twice shy having taken a load of our old boys over the last few years. If I was Sone I'd stay until the end of current contract at a place he's massively valued and seems to be lined up to stay on after playing days, as everyone else here has said.

I can see him staying but being taken out of the league registration in Jan ( you can do that can't you? )

a niche perspective

You can apply to swap individual players in or out of the registered squad at any time. But it is a bureaucratic process and does have to be approved by the EFL.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

If he's looking to remain in football beyond his playing days. Then he's probably in the perfect place right now, to pick up plenty of guidance from KM and his staff...
Aside from the fact, that he still offers a lot to our younger players, in and around the dressing room and training ground. And can still do a job for us in certain matches.
Whether he plays much or not, on paper at least, it looks like a mutually beneficial arrangement for all parties, atm. Imo.
You need senior pro's in the building. He still has a big role to play here..

Not sure Oxford fans would be quite so welcoming of Aluko!!

RIP Sir Bobby

He was never going to say “I’m not arsed about playing” though. Given he regularly wasn’t making the squad in L1 in the second half of last season, I can’t imagine he expected to play much if at all in the league this season. He seems a very clever bloke that is thinking about the best place to take his next step into coaching.
