I heard the other day that the leading cause of death for sloths is them mistaking their limbs for branches and falling to their death. According to the Sloth Conservation Foundation:

“the leading cause of death in sloths is when they mistake their own arms for tree branches and, grabbing it, fall out of the tree”.

Surprisingly, the truth behind this rumor might be one of the most frequent questions we get asked here at SloCo! Sloths do NOT grab their own arms and fall to their deaths. This strange myth comes from an unpublished essay by Douglas Adams and is based on an encounter with a baby sloth. Baby sloths are born with an overwhelming instinct to cling onto moms’ fur. If separated from her with nothing else to hold onto, they will often cling onto themselves in panic. An adult sloth in the wild is perhaps the least likely animal to mistakenly grab its own limbs – every move they make is delicate and careful. A sudden, thoughtless movement would attract the attention of predators, sloths are stealthy not stupid!

Good point!

I had even read the comments about the capital of Peru (and understood them) and still posted about a sloth! Doh!
