Just under a week until the transfer window opens...squad 17:59 - Jun 8 with 4570 views | BlueBoots | (Hladky) Walton Slicker Clarke Tuanzebe (Donacien) Davis Ndaba Woolfenden Edmundson Burgess Baggott Morsy El Miz Luongo Taylor Burns Chaplin Harness Broadhead Hirst Al-Hamadi Ladapo Ahadme (Players in brackets out of contract 2024) U21's Humphreys Obviously nowhere near the squad we'll start the season with, but included everyone to get a feel for areas where we're short, and the players that we'll need to move out either permanently or on loan. Rumours flying around as they usually do this time of year, but I'm sure as we've seen in previous windows there will be players / deals being worked out on the quiet, and we'll try to get our business done as early as possible. Clearly short in wide areas (with Omari and Samiento returning from loans)...but are we going to continue to set up in the same way in the Prem? KMcK strikes me as a manager who is more likely to rip up his tactics than his squad to get the best out of what he has available - his loyalty to the players was rewarded last season, so hopefully the majority will get their chance to have a crack at the Prem. Regarding signings, I think you give yourself a chance if you have a goalkeeper and centre-forward in your squad who are experienced at the level you are playing at, and build around that; good example of that was signing Moore on loan last season to help us get over the line. Doesn't mean that ones we currently have can't / won't make the step up, but we do have quite a few younger players who would benefit from being around those who have been there and done it. At the opposite end, one thing I'd really like us to do over the next few windows is to use the Prem money to build for the future...for "U21's" I've just listed Humphreys - don't know how many of the current crop are showing the potential to eventually step up, but we've obviously suffered from players being poached by clubs higher up the league while we've been in the lower divisions. Lots of players with potential either playing in the lower leagues or released from other Prem clubs we could be looking to bring in - won't count towards squad numbers which would be a bonus too.

Pretty much direct replacements for Williams, Travis, Hutchinson and Moore.

No secret that we're trying to go back for Hutchinson, but any of the others? I actually wouldn't be averse to Travis making a return - thought he looked quite good on the ball, liked a tackle / interception and quite quick around the pitch. Although I don't remember him doing it for us, he's covered at full-back before too, and always useful to have a versatile player in the squad. Think with a full pre-season rather than joining midway through we'd see a bit more from him, and still relatively young (26) for a DM.

Other than Hutchinson, the one with the highest ceiling is Williams, who briefly looked like a right-sided Leif Davis. But there are obvious issues there.

I know people won't agree, but I think Kieffer Moore should be our first signing. He will get us 10-15 goals next season. We need experience and he has plenty of it. Would be less than £5M, so find better for less. I would also take Travis back. Thought he looked quality. [Post edited 8 Jun 2024 20:57]

10-15 goals in the PL? That’s a *big* ask. We may well not be able to find better for less (at least in the Uk) but the question is can we find better for more.

Yes we can, but I think Kieffer knowing us is a big advantage. We will need to start well and having someone who already knows the bulk of the squad is an advantage. We can think higher, but they will cost.

Your guess is as good as mine! It would be a worry if we were the only team in for a particular player (unless it's a situation like Hirst last season where he told his club he had his heart set on moving to us), as any player likely to improve us is bound to have interest from other clubs, which may slow things down. I just hope we can continue to find players who buy into what is being built here (off the pitch as well as on it) - word that gets used a lot regarding the playing squad is "humble", and having everyone dialled in to working hard for eachother will go a long way to giving us a chance next season. The Euros will probably impact the transfer market overall too, which will trickle down to us; puts players in the shop window (and risks them getting injured), which might create a few unexpected transfers.

Moore as a third striker and bench option I can see, but I suspect that puts Al-Hamadi out on loan and I'm in the camp that thinks he's a great wildcard option who will develop very well here under KMc even if he has minimal minutes. Maybe we can accommodate both with Hirst and one big signing and AA-H can get some time in a 10 role?

After last year, signing Williams does look like it would be a huge risk, despite clearly having all the ability. We'll end up in trouble if we make signings who are only available for quarter of a season again...

I think Al-Hamadi falls into the same category as Sarmiento at the moment (can't remember who, but I think someone in the squad referred to Sarmiento as a "chaos" player) Good to have players who can produce out of nothing and do the unpredictable, but the downside of that is if you / they don't know what they're going to do next, their teammates will struggle to as well! Moore would be useful to have in the squad along with Hirst, but I do think you're right that Hirst, Moore +1 (maybe someone who can play at both 9 and 10) would mean a loan for Al-Hamadi (as he's now over 21, so unlike last season would count towards squad numbers) Don't think that would necessarily be a bad thing after jumping 2 divisions (now 3) in his breakthrough season; we know how KMcK operates with his use of subs, but we'll need "finishers" who can start games if necessary and big ask to give a young lad that responsibility. Who knows though...might come back for pre-season, totally smash it and make himself impossible to leave out of the squad.

I agree, but as you say many won't, but I think Moore would be a good signing for the right deal. I think he gives us options upfront, different to Hirst and he is someone who can help defensively at corners/freekicks if we're under pressure/hanging on.

I very much doubt we’ll sign Moore. He’s a downgrade on Hirst. We’ll sign someone who will likely take Hirst’s place.

Looks like Moore is off to Cardiff. He's the wrong age of 30 for us. I'd take Sarmiento on a permanent deal. I know we have the option for a loan this season, presumably there is a date by which we'd have to take the option up. Although Burnley took their option on Josh Brownhill he's one we've been loosely linked with, obvious links to Ashton.

I didn't see Agbaje play last season, but the previous season seemed to have the potential to become a good attacking right back (think he was injured for a spell though) If we're scouting U21's at other clubs, like the look of a couple at Charlton who would fit our system - Miles Leaburn (big physical centre forward) and Thierry Small (attacking left back) - maybe a bit of payback for stealing Hermann and Holland? (not that I hold grudges )

I know, but he is a ready made for our squad. I would start Hirst every time over Moore, but from the bench or injury, I think for under £5M we could do a lot worse.

Slicker now over 21? Donacien Ndaba Edmundson Baggot El Miz Ladapo Ahadme AAH now over 21? I feel like we need about 8-10 additions to complete the squad work we didn’t do in the Championship because we were only there one season, now we also need several PL experienced players to add into that general upgrading. If we were to keep one of the current GKs and AAH with the squad perhaps that helps with less disruption this summer.

Think the word "disruption" you used is important - seen quite a few teams come up and make signings into the double figures, and then struggle to create any momentum when trying to find the best combination of all the new / old players. We've got 2 seasons worth of momentum that we need build on. Looking at your leave / sell / loan list... Hoping Hladky signs a new contract, we bring in a new keeper to compete with him (maybe even another non-squad keeper to replace Hayes for training purposes too - wonder if Bart fancies it? ), with Walton and Slicker get loan moves. Feel for JD missing out on most of last season, but sadly might be a similar situation to Evans - here until fit again, and then found a move. Championship loans for Baggott / AAH ? Ndaba, El Miz and Ahadme a bit older than that pair, so probably the right time for them to find a club they can settle down at, rather than moving around on loan. Feels like time is up for Ladapo (played a big part over the past couple of seasons, particularly in League One), but not sure about Edmundson...think he's a bit quicker / more mobile than our other CB's which could be useful coming up against more pace in the Prem.

From this squad: Hladky Walton Slicker Clarke Davis Tuanzebe Edmundson Woolfenden Burgess Baggott Morsy Taylor Luongo Humphreys Burns Chaplin Harness Broadhead Ladapo, Al-Hamadi Hirst To something like this: Plus 1, Hladky Slicker (new first choice GK) Plus 2, Clarke Davis (new first choice rb, backup lb) Plus 1, Tuanzebe Woolfenden Burgess Plus 2, Morsy Taylor Luongo (Morsy eventual replacement, Luongo eventual replacement) Plus 3, Burns Chaplin Broadhead (hutch hopefully, Sarmiento or alternative, one more) Plus 1, Al-Hamadi Hirst (new first choice striker with prem experience)

Brereton Diaz strikes me as direct competition for George Hirst. Definitely an upgrade on Moore. Would be v excited if we got him. We need Hutchinson back. I've previously posted that I like the look of Renato Viega as a young, mobile defensive midfielder. If not him, then Ben Sheaf. We need two defenders one RB, one center Back - unless we think Baggott can step up but I think its probably a year too soon and he needs a season in the Championship. I also like Tom Fellows at WBA. I wouldn’t be averse to getting Moore back - but very much doubt he’d get that many goals. That would make him one of the better Prem strikers and I don’t think he’s got that in him. Overall we’ll sureLy be looking for upgrades on current players. Of the two senior keepers, I reckon we’re more likely to let Walton go that Hladky. Why would we keep our No 2 and let our No 1 go? Makes no sense!

Re: keepers I've mentioned previously I think Mat Ryan would be a excellent fit; Aussie captain, commands the box, shot stopper and good with his feet. very good season in the top division of Dutch football, and over 100 games in the Prem prior to that so good experience - out of contract this summer too, so would save us a few quid . Walton had a great season in League One, but very little competitive football last season - getting a season loan in the Championship would seem like a plan.
