Alternatively - it’s a shame to see a mother battling cancer wheeled out by the firm in order to play the sentimental sympathy support when she should be allowed to cope in the privacy of the family.

The timing was certainly interesting.

Her attendance, as far as I can ascertain, was only announced after the Met failed to block a Republican protest on the grounds that it would interfere with the Human Rights of attendees to enjoy the parade.

Someone more cynical than me might suggest that they wanted to be absolutely sure of what the coverage and headlines would focus upon.

She wasn't "wheeled out by the firm in order to play the sentimental sympathy support". I would imagine she has the nation's sympathy already.

She was there because she has a sense of duty.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Did it need to be announced, though?

Her statement makes abundantly clear that she has good days and atrocious days, as would anyone in her situation. I'd assume that she probably doesn't know what sort of day she's going to have from one day to the next.

Imagine, following the big announcement, if today was one of the absolutely atrocious days. Would that not create the wholly-avoidable dilemma of going out on the worst of days, or staying home and facing all the speculation that would be generated by a no-show?

I would focus on the positives rather than the what ifs and could have beens.

Maybe she wanted to get back into the swing of things as a way of dealing with what she’s going through? It doesn’t have to be a plot, it doesn’t have to be because her patriotic duty overrides all else. It could be either of those things of course, but if she’s anything like the rest of us she could well have just wanted to be ‘normal’ again (normal for the royals, which is obscene of course but another issue).

My guess is that she has bad days and less bad days and won’t know how she’s going to feel one day to the next. Holding the honorific title of Colonel of the Irish Guards who were on parade yesterday, it was a good event for her to attend if she wished to.

I’m no monarchist, but at a human level, I can only feel sorry for her going through that, as I do anyone going through chemotherapy and all the misery and worry that brings.

Trooping the Colour was beautifully done, as usual. A spectacular bit of pageantry. They practice very hard for this and it shows. It always interests me how tv distorts the size of an area whether it be a football pitch or Horse Guards Parade. It really isn’t as big as it looks. Little known fact - it was once part of the Tilt Yard (jousting) at Whitehall Palace.

She was there because it was the Irish guards trooping the colour and as their colonel she done her best to be there to acknowledge that!
