I mean it was definitely a handball - the ball hit his hand - but his arm was close to his body, and the shot wasn't from far away, so he didn't have time to react.

It looked a blatant handball to me. So much so that I can’t be certain it wasn’t intentional (instinctive response) insofar as such things are. If your argument is that his arm was tucked in, then it might be time for a new prescription or you might want to take the plunge and invest in an hdtv.

Here's the thing, his hand was well away from his body as the striker was lining up the shot, he thought, better get my hand closer to my body in case the ball hits it, so he moves his arm closer to his body to get it out of the way, and before he can get it fully out of the way, the ball hits it...
Or, he maybe thought, I'll make it look as though I'm getting my hand out of the way, but let the ball hit it on the way.....
Maybe defenders should defend their penalty areas with a Riverdance and keep their arms in at all times? |  |
