New Carpets and Pet Safety 09:10 - Jul 19 with 3146 views | Swailsey | I think this is potentially my worst thread title ever, sorry. Because I trust TWTD slightly more than Reddit and/or Mumsnet, I have a question. I’ve had new carpets put in my house in every room except one - the living room. I hadn’t ever thought of this, but someone mentioned that the ‘new carpet’ smell can be harmful to pets and sometimes humans. My old kitty is pretty poorly with kidney disease, and now I’m convinced I’ve given him a death sentence. Is this hyperbole? Should me and him sleep in the living room for a couple of nights with the windows open? If you give me advice and he dies horribly I won’t blame you. Ty [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 9:11]

New Carpets and Pet Safety on 09:22 - Jul 19 with 2633 views | _clive_baker_ | I've never heard of this. Not saying it isn't true but I had cats as a kid and we never stopped them going near new carpets, they seemed ok. If it makes you feel better about the situation then having the cat sleep in the living room sounds sensible to me. On the subject of new carpets, probably familiar to everyone but I wouldn't order from Carpetright at the moment if you ever want to see them, they're on their last legs.

New Carpets and Pet Safety on 09:51 - Jul 19 with 2531 views | Mookamoo | We had a radiator burst which meant replacing our living room carpet. We did take the decision to replaster while we at it, but one of our cats freaked and got cystitis with the stress of it all. She is a particular rubbish cat though. Can you keep a big chunk of the old carpet and lay it on top of the new one for a bit?
New Carpets and Pet Safety on 09:52 - Jul 19 with 2526 views | ThisIsMyUsername | Why do we have carpets on floors in the UK? I've recently been to Germany twice with my girlfriend and all of her family have wooden floors throughout their houses. It just feels cleaner, 'cooler', and of course is easier to clean. Homes there in general seem better designed than here. [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 9:53]

Although, the 'easier to clean' part is therefore an advantage with wooden floors, so swings and roundabouts.

Warmer. Inhibits draughts between floorboards. Less noisy. Reduces the chance of dropped things breaking. Much nicer for decorators to kneel on whan painting skirting boards.

Despite asking 'why', I knew that insulation was one of the reasons. Houses here are designed to keep the heat in, which is great most of the time apart from the two weeks in summer when it's unbearably hot. Point two, that's 'their' fault for being clumsy and/or noisy. Point three, don't care. I'm fully on team wood now. [Post edited 19 Jul 2024 10:22]

I had a real wood floor put in a house recently, insulation goes under the floor to avoid draughts and dampens noise. The skirting board matches the floor so no painting or kneeling required. Any spills are easy to wipe up. Apart from aesthetics, the main thing is a hard floor is far more hygienic than one that's carpeted, especially if you have pets and / or children. I really struggle to understand why people put down carpets other than for the tradition.

If there’s no wriggle-out option (laid within last 14 days? If it makes household members ill?), I’d advise leaving all windows and doors open as much as possible for as long as possible to allow a breeze blowing through to speed up gassing off. At least you’ve got the weather for that.

Let me help. Carpets hold the dust - wooden floors highlight it. You can xacuum a carpet. You can scratch a wooden floor Pets can walk on carpets. They slip and slide on wooden floors and scratch it A carpet stays in place - wooden floors move and buckle win the weather A carpet is nice and snug under your tootsies - a wooden floor isn’t. Basically it’s Lino for the 21st century.

Nope, I'd rather hoover up the dust when I see it rather have it hiding in the the thick pile along with dead skin, animal / human hairs and insect larvae that all add to the snug feeling under your "tootsies"
