I think lime wash wouldhave been a major ingedient so it adheres and provides a protective coat. I can't see the colouring ingedients alone doing the job. I believe originally the suffolk pink started off dark and with oxidisation faded to a paler hue. Modern paints obviously now don't have that problem and can ape approximately the original shade. | | | |

Not totally true.. it's been debated for years, my dear old Gran always said they painted the house using Suffolk pink and the colour came from sloe berries. Her Sister always argued the colour they used came from burnt clay - both were born in the 1800s. People didn't always use blood hence the various shades of Suffolk pink
This is the point I keep making the original Suffolk Pink was by its very nature different shades from light (pink) to dark (red)
I often helped paint houses in the 60s and we always made sure we had enough paint to completely paint the front, back, or sides on the same day. If you started on the front and ran out half way and had to mix a new batch you could always see the different shade. We used limewash with crushed clay brick in those days
True Suffolk pink has always been a different shade, it was never a case of popping down to b&q and buying 6 tins of dulux weathershied Suffolk pink paint.
It's similar to British Racing Green, that was slightly different shades and then some group decided to defined precisely the actual shade of Green and trademark it, and now people have a definite shade. Nobody has ever done that with Suffolk pink. But because we're now brainwashed into thinking you can only buy based on a paint chart people are confused a colour, Suffolk Pink, can have different shades |  | | |
