Davis and Clarke down the left is going to be terrifying for most defences... 11:35 - Aug 23 with 2232 viewstonybied

...isn't it?

In fact, once everyone is back fit our press from the front should be on another level through the whole of each match compared to last season, and last season it was unreal!

It’s mad to think that last season’s starting front four of (mostly) Hirst, Broady, Chappers and Burns will likely be this seasons finishers, coming on about the 65 minute mark to run a tiring defence into the ground.
For a newly promoted side, that’s some serious depth.

It's good but terrified isn't the word I'd use.

Not to be negative, more realistic, but we are in the Premier League. The full backs we come against this season have played in the Prem or Europe's top leagues for a number of seasons and most even on the international stage. I don't think they will undermine our left hand side as it will be our main threat, but I don't think they'll be terrified.

Terrified for me is if you play France and you've got Hernandez bombing on from LB with Mbappe ahead of him. Long 90mins.

I rather think Mbappe would call off sick if he had to face Tuanzebe again.

I doubt it - this is the prem we're talking about, and Clarke and Leif were in the champ last season. We've increasing reasons to be optimistic - but lets keep ourselves grounded chaps!

I think we've got a first choice (or I think will become so) front 4 now that will be horrible to play against for any team - Delap, Omari, Clarke, Broja. Pace, power, direct, technical ability, strong on transition.

Appreciate what you're saying, but terrifying at this level is Gvardiol & Doku, or the likes of Son. If you're a right back in the premier league you probably don't have sleepless nights over Leif Davis and Jack Clarke with the greatest of respect to them.

Not to say it doesn't have the makings of a good partnership for us though. I was gutted we didn't get Philogene, I think he's certainly a premier league player, but having missed out on him Clarke is as good as we could've hoped for as he's quality.

Clarke, Omari, Szmodics, Burns, Delap etc have serious physicality, pace, energy, creativty. Perfect for our system and exactly the sort of players you want to watch play for your side. With the additions through the spine of the team in Casjuste & Phillips we've properly stepped on a level vs. where we were only 3 months ago. Now over to McKenna and his team to shape them into a cohesive unit, no doubt he'll achieve it.

I'm under no illusions as to the fact we are fairly weak defensively on the left (due to the way we play Leif) and plenty of teams will find joy down that side.

To your point, these were pretty much the best 2 left-sided players in the Championship last season going forward, with stats that massively outshone the division they were in. Clarke is probably the most exciting signing we'll make this window. He has consistently been too good for the Champ for the last couple of seasons. I think Hutchinson might have a higher ceiling (only slightly though) but he still has to prove it over a prolonged period of time.

I think what's exciting is the different combinations we have that can be selected, switched during the game, or changed with substitutions, so McKenna can set up the team to target the different strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. It feels like we have so many options now, which hopefully will ensure we are not predictable to play against.

Of course, it going t take some time for McKenna to work his magic and it will be interesting to see how we counter teams targeting our left hand side defensively.

I can't wait to see how this squad develops. If Davis and Clarke are anywhere close to being terrifying by the end of the season, we should be okay.

I agree completely, there's so much versatility and unpredictability in the forward options. Szmodics can play off the left or centrally (perhaps even the right), Omari anywhere, Delap #9 or wide right or even 10 as he did for Hull at times, Broadhead left or centre, same for Clarke although he'll play off the left I think. Its only really Burns who wont deviate from the right hand side and probably Chaplin whose more accustomed in the 10 role.

It'll be really interesting to see what becomes of Morsy / Phillips / Cajuste as options and where the partnership evolves, and to what extent Broja can add to us in the #9. They'll be the makings of our season I think.

It's certainly an 'attacking' left side.

KMs approach has been, very much, to overload and attack teams. He has tweaked and adjusted over times but our approach is to create overloads and third man runs with that left side getting forward (Davis as we know plays much more as a wing back/ winger than a LB) and beyond the three attacking midfielders.

If, as KM has suggested, we are going to stick with this approach, then he's right to bring in more 'attacking' quality.

The pace will certainly cause issues. Conversely, if they don't develop the understanding that sometimes one of them has to defend, then we're in trouble. I'm sure all prem managers are aware of our strengths and weaknesses, but you can be sure all mgrs will have noted aka as Liverpool did, if you let Davis go forward there can be a nice big hole you can exploit.
We will need Clarke tracking back to help sometimes

Agree. For all the positives in davis he's not a horrid fullback to play against. He ain't gonna skin you and dazzle you with his footwork.

Clarke.. I don't think he's even that skillful but has the knack of dropping the shoulder and gaining yards.

Isn't it interesting how we all have difference opinions. For me Clarke is not one I'm excited about. But there's probably a reason for that - I know someone who knew him a few years ago and let's just say that they didn't exactly sing his praises as a person! I really hope he proves me wrong and rips up the prem!
