Stuff you Zuckerberg. Another dangerous corporate Trump sycophant 19:29 - Jan 7 with 1776 views | redrickstuhaart | Facebook (which in fairness hardly ever deals with reported breaches of their guidelines anyway) will not now do any fact checking, but will rely upon "community notes" like Musk's twitter. Another very dangerous step in the direction of the far right and the "right to freely speak" irrespective of whether it is dangerous and dishonest. Be afraid. Couple this with Trump threatening military action to get the territory he wants, including an open threat to a Nato member. Putinesque. We are in very very dangerous times. [Post edited 7 Jan 19:29]

Stuff you Zuckerberg. Another dangerous corporate Trump sycophant on 19:56 - Jan 7 with 1615 views | NthQldITFC | It's thoroughly depressing and very deeply worrying. I'm not sure how humanity backs out off the nosedive we seem to be going into. As much as I dislike organised religion, at least it tends to carry selflessness and morality and basic human decency as foundations for a life philosophy. The sort of individual and corporate monsters (I personally think that's a justifiable label) who are taking over democratic countries now are collecting power and wealth (and crucially influence over the poorly educated) which they think will make them immortal and neither decent human society or a safely balanced natural environment are likely to survive. Unfortunately, we're all part of the system and we're allowing this to happen with our 'me first' maximum disposable income at any cost and pretend not to see what underpins it attitudes. I don't believe there's any element of polemic left in this; if we don't change course now we are royally f**ked.

Ill have to disagree with you on religion. The religous right in the US is precisely where most of Trump's support comes from.

Edit: Just caught up on the deeper meaning behind this and take back the above, though it probably does save money too. [Post edited 7 Jan 22:33]

True. Maybe it's just the quiet, individual, humble sort of religion and/or philosophy that can give people values which would give Earth & Humanity a chance of being a long-term viable prospect. Once things get organised they get corrupted by the sort of people who feel the need for power and prestige (i.e the weak! And the narcissistic.)

I am unconvinced. The values most religions teach are highly questionable. Starting with unjustified credulity!
Stuff you Zuckerberg. Another dangerous corporate Trump sycophant on 21:05 - Jan 7 with 1330 views | DJR | It was targeted Facebook ads which were a crucial factor in Trump's 2016 victory. As regards fact checking, it is to be noted that the British newspapers are not subject to it either. As it is, I do believe in free speech, and it is not clear to me, if these platforms exist, if there is much than can be done to prevent the spread of misinformation because banning the platforms would be a step to far. And for every post fact checked, there will be thousands spreading misinformation that can never be checked, whatever resources are thrown at it. [Post edited 7 Jan 21:10]

Sure. But it is the mindset and normalisation of ignorance that is the problem. The message it sends.

Sadly, that's the way the world is going, and my experience is that people who believe this sort of thing will never be persuaded otherwise, whether or not there is fact checking. And it probably doesn't help if Apple AI is reporting false news that Rafa Nadal is gay, which doesn't portend well for the increasing use of AI. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx27zwp7jpxo Meanwhile, a separate AI summary told some users of the BBC Sport app that "Brazilian tennis player, Rafael Nadal, comes out as gay". That false alert appeared to relate to a story about "trailblazing" Brazilian gay tennis player Joao Lucas Reis da Silva and the impact of his openness about his sexuality on the sport more widely. A BBC spokesperson said: "It is essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently - as this has happened multiple times. "As the most trusted news media organisation in the world, it is crucial that audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications." One could say the world has gone mad, but there is little we ordinary people can do about it. [Post edited 7 Jan 21:18]

There is suggestion that at least, these fact checkers do reduce misinformation and acceptance of incorrect facsts, even if they dont shift people's "this is what I reckon" filter.

That's a fair point but it is still the case that no one fact checks the headlines and articles in the right wing media, which have set the agenda since Starmer came to power. [Post edited 7 Jan 21:36]

Very different though. You choose which rag to buy. And there are many, with different approaches and headlines on clear display in the shop. Facebook and twitter are absolutely dominant and a significant part in the information received by a huge number of people, who are not instinctively choosing it as a biased information source. It is not coincidence that a narcissist like Musk bought twitter and is using it to control narratives and thinking worldwide. FB now the same.

Saw this horrifying report recently. AI is growing so fast it can't be regulated. It needs urgent review and sanctioning. https://www.iwf.org.uk/about-us/why-we-exist/our-research/how-ai-is-being-abused Trigger warning: article discusses the production of AI child abuse images.

Facebook in my experience (about 14 years) has been far worse than Twitter/x; having done little if anything to control content; and farming your personal information to boot. Meanwhile, saw this a few days ago, have been meaning to post it - “Godfather of AI’ shortens odds of the technology wiping out humanity over next 30 years”. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/dec/27/godfather-of-ai-raises-odds-o [Post edited 8 Jan 1:33]
