It's thoroughly depressing and very deeply worrying. I'm not sure how humanity backs out off the nosedive we seem to be going into.
As much as I dislike organised religion, at least it tends to carry selflessness and morality and basic human decency as foundations for a life philosophy. The sort of individual and corporate monsters (I personally think that's a justifiable label) who are taking over democratic countries now are collecting power and wealth (and crucially influence over the poorly educated) which they think will make them immortal and neither decent human society or a safely balanced natural environment are likely to survive.
Unfortunately, we're all part of the system and we're allowing this to happen with our 'me first' maximum disposable income at any cost and pretend not to see what underpins it attitudes. I don't believe there's any element of polemic left in this; if we don't change course now we are royally f**ked. |  |

As regards fact checking, it is to be noted that the British newspapers are not subject to it either.
As it is, I do believe in free speech, and it is not clear to me, if these platforms exist, if there is much than can be done to prevent the spread of misinformation because banning the platforms would be a step to far. And for every post fact checked, there will be thousands spreading misinformation that can never be checked, whatever resources are thrown at it.

Facebook and twitter are absolutely dominant and a significant part in the information received by a huge number of people, who are not instinctively choosing it as a biased information source.

Facebook in my experience (about 14 years) has been far worse than Twitter/x; having done little if anything to control content; and farming your personal information to boot.
