On a more serious note, it’s an interesting one on Doak, we’d been after Philogene for a while, but Doak has only recently drawn attention. However, we did submit a bid around the same time we were talking to Villa (again) so there appears to be an intention to sign another player for that position (ie not just Phil G) the question is, how much does McK want Doak? I reckon it would take £23/25 million to secure him, but he’s in form and contracted to the league leaders, so he’s always going to carry a premium, especially in a January window. It would be fantastic to get him in, but we desperately need a 9 and given the amount of clubs chasing a front man currently, it might well take a larger fee than we thought to secure one and I’m unclear on what’s left in the pot 🤷♂️ a loan with obligation to buy, or just a straight loan would be ideal for us for one of the positions, leaving us with more room to manoeuvre, but it’s easier said than done, all of our closest rivals are after the same thing, maybe we need to look abroad for one of these positions?

Urgh. James Joyce. The bane of my English A Level course. No idea what the big deal is about him. See also, F Scott Fitzgerald.

Joyce primarily, love 'Ulysses' & his poems. Finnegans Wake not so much, would forgive anyone for that! Can't say Fitz is a fav, but he's undoubtedly significant & I find him interesting.

I just couldn't handle Joyce's epic paragraphs and endless narrative. Fitzgerald - I read the last page of Tender is the Night, and thought 'has someone ripped the last chapter out of the book?' lol. Also failed to finish The Great Gatsby. Not for me. I prefer Oscar Wilde, Mary Shelley and Jane Austen for classics, but appreciate that we all have different tastes.

Try some of these? "I Hear an Army' by James Joyce "I hear an army charging upon the land, And the thunder of horses plunging, foam about their knees: Arrogant, in black armour, behind them stand, Disdaining the reins, with fluttering whips, the charioteers. They cry unto the night their battle-name: I moan in sleep when I hear afar their whirling laughter. They cleave the gloom of dreams, a blinding flame, Clanging, clanging upon the heart as upon an anvil. They come shaking in triumph their long, green hair: They come out of the sea and run shouting by the shore. My heart, have you no wisdom thus to despair? My love, my love, my love, why have you left me alone?" https://poets.org/poem/i-hear-army https://mypoeticside.com/poets/james-joyce-poems

Is Doak the kind of forward we want though. I think he’s more of a wide player with pace to burn rather than a central player - which is, imho, what we need. Someone to plug the Delap role after 75 mins.

I think Doak is probably viewed as a step up from Burns in the right sided attacking role, with Omari seen primarily asin the middle of the 3. With Godfrey signed, Tuanzebe almost back & Johnson playing some decent games, we are now well covered in the mostly defensive right sided role, whether RB or RWB, which Burns can also play, but not as well in one v one defensive situations. But for where we need to push on for goals in an attacking formation, we need someone who can consistently beat the full back, to send in crosses or cutbacks; I love Wes Burns, but he has struggled to beat Premier League full backs at times this season. Also, this thread hss taken a surprisingly highbrow turn; for the record, when it comes to literature, I mostly enjoy ghost written footballer autobiographies.
Philogene and Hutchinson on 09:10 - Jan 16 with 1858 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | Great complimentary skillsets as well. Philogene is a real danger when he stands you up One v One. Even from a standing start. He has the ability to trick his way past you in a different way to what we already have. In another thread I compared him to a poor mans Neymar (still a compliment) they use the ball in very similar ways. Happy to slow down, stand you up and beat you with pure skill. Far better on the left than the right though, so interesting to see where we use him.
