Johnson v Doku 16:24 - Jan 19 with 2128 viewsNeverSayDie

Is something I feel just shouldn’t be happening, he is the most immobile player we have IMO and up against one of the best wingers on the planet, I think that’s going to make for a horrible watch, but sincerely hope to be proven wrong.

Interesting, looks like Godfrey is tight to Doku 🧐 playing more of a back 4, or just having to put the 3rd CB on Doku, what does that do across the middle?

Can see already that Godfrey has been tasked with covering Doku and every time he moves over, there’s a massive hole between him and the other CB’s , when that gets spotted it’s going to be a big problem

Johnson has played well so far and Godfrey is working well as cover for him

Possibly having Godfrey focus on Doku had a bearing on that space that Haaland expolited there. He shouldn't be able to slot in a gap like that when we've got 3 CBs.

Yep, the one thing the shape normally gives us, is making us extremely hard to break down, but Godfrey being pushed over just nullifies the block in the middle, leaves holes for Haaland and gives him 1v1 against the defenders, which is not what you want at all

And there you go, Godfrey comes to support Johnson, ball through, O’Shea tied up with a runner and we end up with 1 CB in the middle of the goal, way, way too easy, the entire 5 block is nullified by Godfrey pushing wide all the time, need someone with pace to be playing in Johnson’s position

Speed wasnt the issue. It was the failure to get out to Doku, thereby allowing him to get a run going.

Speed and agility is absolutely the issue, Johnson isn’t able to match Doku, hence Godfrey is asked to push wide which destroys the normally solid 5 back, its football 101 and we can only blame ourselves for not having anyone with pace on Doku

No. He was lazy and didnt get out to him. Dont care how fast you are, if you let a quick player get some speed up whilst you are stationary, you are in difficulty.

Johnson is slow, very slow and doesn’t turn well, against someone rapid and immensely agile, you don’t need to be a genius to spot that this could be a major problem in the game, laziness doesn’t create the hole and destroy the 5 block, one of the 3 CB’s being asked to go wide does that and that happens when you have a complete mismatch between Johnson and Doku, which was clearly recognised pre match, hence Godfrey playing wide and tight to Doku from the start, why was Johnson started????? As I write we concede again as Johnson is miles away and Godfrey is having to cover Doku and a runner into the hole that his move across has left, like I said, this is football 101 and it is being ruthlessly exploited

You are ignoring what actually happened in favour of supporting your pre formed criticism.

All 3 goals have come from the same thing, do you think I’m ignoring what happened, or you are failing to appreciate the reality?

Maybe I’m wrong and the 3 goals arising from the issue I alluded to, is just a coincidence 🤷‍♂️

Johnson can’t get back, Godfrey left 1v1 or 2v1 again and it’s 0-4, how has this not been changed at half time, sorry but McKenna has to take a huge heap of responsibility for this, completely unable to see what the issue is and address it, this is shocking all round

Axel, Burns, anybody with some pace that he couldn’t run straight past would have taken the pressure off and not allowed Doku the freedom of the city, poor old Godfrey has been thrown to the wolves, I’d be fuming if I was him

You have to ask why Godfrey wasn’t playing RB, if there was any possibility that Greaves could have played, that’s what should have happened, we’ve completely shot ourselves in the foot

Woolfenden & O’Shea worked better than O’Shea & Godfrey. Let’s so how Tuenzebe does.

Instead of Johnson, or Godfrey though? lol, I think McKenna must have been smoking crack, cos the way he set up today is just ridiculous IMO and he still doesn’t get it if he thinks keeping Johnson on the pitch is the right call, scary stuff

Godfrey wasn’t the issue, he was left completely exposed by the tactics and Johnson, Axel will fair no better, cos he’ll be in the same boat; though Doku has now switched, he’ll find it a lot easier than he would have done

In fairness neither Omari or Morsy got in the right place at the right time after about 15 mins it seems

I think everybody’s life was made extremely difficult by how wrong we got the system and the plan to nullify Doku, it actually split us wide open, I’m sure errors have been made elsewhere, but that right side and the tactics there are what’s killed us
