A couple of thoughts... 07:52 - Jan 20 with 1623 viewstractorboy1978

Firstly, I think McKenna's assessment post match was spot on - it was a game that got away from us against what is still (on their day) the best team in the division. Up until their first goal we played about as well as you could have hoped, didn't give a lot away and carried a bit of threat at the other end. 1-0 became 2-0 too quickly and then they went through the gears. They were just better than us all over the pitch, as is to be expected.

Ultimately, yesterday and next Saturday aren't going to define our season. We need to stay resilient, stick together and rally for the remainder of the season. We've shown we can be competitive against most teams in this league. The highlight yesterday was probably those that stayed to the end and clapped the players off the pitch. You could see a few of them looked visibly lifted when they came over to the North Stand.

Let's be honest, this City team has looked very fragile.

We made them look like the City of old.

Harsh statement on us. Teams like Man City will regularly eat teams like ours alive when they hit their high gears. I don’t think they needed any help from us to look as good as they did.

To be fair, their last 6 games has seen 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. 16 goals scored (obviously helped by yesterday!) and 6 conceded.

They had a major wobble, but are clearly coming out of the other side of it now.

But that was never going to permanent. I’m not saying we didn’t give them a hand but at the same time I don’t think we made them look like the city of old. I think they can take a bit of credit for that.

Ederson and Dias back as well which is massive.

Ederson hasnt been out injured, he had been dropped, but he is a great keeper when in form.

Dias is big for them.

But it was the same against Brighton, good until they scored the first goal.
Maybe it's only me but I'm concerned the players heads have dropped as soon as the opposition scored the first goal in the last two games. Is confidence eroding fast?

Yes, it’s bound to. That’s why it’s imperative the club, players and everyone stick together. It’s in tough times you find out what people are made of. Do they dig harder, work harder, learn from it, back each other or shy off and play the blame game?

I think it’s less about heads dropping after the first goal than teams going after us when they score to kill the game. We have obvious weaknesses which these good teams will and do exploit. The biggest for me is an inability to control games at this level and impose ourselves.

We were ok and in the game before they scored, but even then they were more balanced and pressing us all over the field and exploiting the gaps that were inevitably opening up - as you’d expect a top team to do.

I think that's actually been a bit of a problem all season. If we let in the first goal, we rarely look like getting anything from the game.

Not sure if it's a confidence thing, or if it's just that it allows the opposition to manage the game on their terms from that point.

I agree that it was particularly stark in the last 2 games though.

You mean apart from the 8-0 win against Salford, the 4-1 win against West Ham and the 2-0 away win against Leicester. City’s form still being poor was media hype based on a 2-2 draw at Brentford who have one of the best home records in the league.

City’s form has been building since the Aston Villa defeat, we did not make them look anything that they are not, which is a world class team recovering from a slump.

Quite. And give world class players space, however much in form the team is, and they will punish you. We gave them far too much space and respect and were too open too often.

Yes. They've not been the City of old.

They have been better in their last few matches, but still fragile in defence.

Happy to agree to differ.
