Interesting tbh.
People have raved about his defensive attributes whilst playing his role. Which I've applauded recently.
Plus wes himself has come out and confirmed he's played a more defensive role in some fixtures.
So yes. Wes is imo a better defensive minded player in that role than Johnson. For me johnson doesn't seem to know how to do the full requirement of that role which was dangerous to put out against doku.
We may have got away with that if oshea or axel were playing that rcb slot over godfrey who again is more about getting forward when he's able over defensive solidarity. ( as said by Everton and nodge fans) | |

I think I've seen enough of Johnson. He's just too slow to play wing-back. You can get away with no pace in the centre of the pitch, but not defensively out-wide. Left wingers target him as they know they can breeze past. Or Johnson will stand miles off them to compensate, giving them the freedom to pass or shoot, as Doku did yesterday.
Johnson has qualities. He's comfortable on the ball and keeps possession well. But his attacking chops doesn't compensate for his defensive frailties. One assist (at City) is outweighed by goals conceded through him. Eg West Ham, Bournemouth's first, etc. He's seeing more minutes than McK would like but for Ogbene's injury, but we need someone else if Burns cannot play two games in three days. West Ham didn't renew Johnson's contract for a reason. I don't think he's Prem quality. When fit, Burns must start. | | | |
