Season of pain… 17:10 - Mar 8 with 1419 viewstortoise

I’ll preface this post by saying I’ve not completely given up hope of staying up. I do think we are capable of getting to 30pts… we’ve been close enough in plenty of games. However, it is unlikely and that may well not be enough anyway.

However, this season was always going to be very hard and going down wouldn’t mean we don’t remain on an upward trajectory. We would be a strong side in the Champ with 2 parachute payments. Going up again we would be in a much better position.

It is depressing to lose every week and difficult to keep perspective, but whatever happens this season, we remain a club on the up with a lot to be positive about.

At the start of Cook’s last season, there were a few times I looked nervously at league 2…

Exactly.

Unless we finish bottom, we haven't gone backards by any measure. Progress would see us finishing top 2 more comfortably than last season, but even if we ended up winning the play offs, promotion back to this league would see us with a far better foundation than we had last summer.

The important thing is, whoever is in charge if we are back here gets it right.

The frustrating part is that we've had a number of really disappointing results ( should have / could have ) and not many happy surprises.
Some transfers have been a real disappointment but hindsight is easy.

I'm happy that we're in a very strong position next season - whoever comes or goes.

This notion that we are going to p1ss the championship next year is fantasy.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

The HMS p1ss the league stuff is going a bit far but we shouldn't let current disappointment override the reality of how strong our squad will be next season. Coventry were/are flying and we brushed them aside very comfortably in the cup with a much-changed side. Not the same as a league match obviously but we have come on so so so much and will be challenging right at the top end next season assuming we go down.

It would be a huge disappointment to everyone from fans to execs if we weren't.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Respectfully if you think we're staying up prepare for 5 more games of pain until it's impossible.

Just accept it, I'll do a charity wager £50 right now we are not getting 30 points.

Of course we’re not getting 30 pts.

This strange new trend of outwardly magnanimous charity wagering, aimed at the ever hopefuls and designed to afford the poster a smug ‘told you so’ wink in two months time, is a condescending little sack of w@nk though.

I've got a charity bet with Rommers that we don't get 4 more points this season. Sadly I think I'm going to win. Lots of endeavour but short on quality unfortunately.

£10 to Donkey sanctuary it's a nice way of settling an impasse?

It's the end of the tax year soon. People are just after the giftaid!

I admit that I completely underestimated the sheer gulf in class between the championship and the Premier League.

If we do go down then we will still have parachute payments as well as a very good Championship squad. Adding better players in the close-season should see us do very well in that division.

"Donkey sanctuary" is where the manager keeps his collection of multi-million pound lightweight, ineffectual, poseur signings.

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Fewest home wins and equal most home defeats in a season in ITFC history.

We aren’t capable of getting 30 points.
We have only managed 3 three times this season.

We’ll be good again... one day

I hate that expression. As it goes, of course we are not going to walk it next season. Sport doesn’t work that way. However, we should be in a position to give it a good go.

It’s easy for the dismals to focus on Luton. But Luton are an exception to the general rule. By and large the standard in the Championship is a mile off the Premier League and we should be fine.

I hope the club is seriously planning for next season in the background. That for me includes playing what will be the backbone of the team next year and looking at who we want in our Achilles heel of a midfield.

Yes we will be a strong team next season in the Championship. I say in the Championship because although not impossible every game that passes we either don't make ground or as with this weekend we have lost further ground and the gap is really seven points due to Wolves better goal difference. To make up seven points in ten games and then consolidate is I would say almost impossible. I would go so far as to say the powers that be at PR should now be making plans for a Championship campaign next season. As for the strength of our squad there are many things that can/will happen. Will Delap be with us ? most likely not. Will Cajuste be signed, will Loungo and Morsy be good enough. Phillips is most likely back to Man City. Will any other players be targeted by Premier Clubs or even those promoted. Will those with long term injuries get back to their previous best. Added to that teams that most would admit had a head start on us this season Leicester and Saints won't they still be in the mix ? and there's always a surprise team lurking amongst the also rans in the Championship. So putting into context it's no free ride back to the Prem.

I think that Phillips might well go to Leeds and they might target Davis as well but ‘might’ with a very small m.

Cajuste, I’ll be very surprised if we buy him as I doubt that he would want to play in the second tier.

Omari might well be targeted - Delap, no chance.
