Another 2,000+ left the workforce today... 21:25 - Apr 15 with 1358 viewsZx1988

Whatever your views on the 'crisis' , this is NOT sustainable.

(based on ONS data showing 748,501 live births in 1959, and assuming that all of those born are still alive, retiring on their 66th birthday, and birthdays are spread equally.)

ONS data shows 591,072 live births in 2023 (most recent complete year), which equates to just over 1,600 per day.

Essentially, without immigration, the UK workforce is shrinking by 400 a day, or 146,000 a year.

Easier to get trained workers from elsewhere rather than tackle the root causes, pretty typical of politicians. If young people could afford to buy or rent a home at an earlier age then maybe birth rates would rise. The cost of living, and particularly housing is a joke in this country. The previous generation were largely able to buy a home at 3 times salary, and have only one parent working. Adding a million people to our population every year certainly isn’t going to help with the cost of housing.

In fact a Bank of Canada study found a direct correlation - where supply is least elastic and migrants most educated, a 1% increase in migrant populations produces a 6-8% rise in house prices. So it really depends if we want to tackle the underlying issues, or just continue our human Ponzi scheme. Remember those million people each year will get old too, and require many more than 1 million workers to pay their pensions ….The state pension is not sustainable in its current form, it’s should have been set up as a wealth fund like in Canada and many other places rather than relying on unsustainable compounding population growth.

Surely that means unemployment will go down and wages will go up, or is that too simplistic?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Potentially…but so would taxes in order to pay for the increasing number of pensioners.

Over the next 10 years I wonder how many jobs per day will be rendered unnecessary by AI.

It could all work quite neatly.

…..so long as tomorrows graduates are happy working in a nursing home to pay off their student loan.

I wouldn’t worry, Bluejacko was sharing some good news about this topic.
