Do we stand any chance at all this summer with such a lame attack? Its basically woakes or nothing.

Jimmy and Broad both still walk into this side.

Looking at that 14, the difference between our batting strength and bowling strength is stark.

Even ignoring the bizarre Bashir equation (not being first choice for his county) our pace/seam seems so weak. I like Atkinson, but he's injured. Carse is fine. Woakes is dependable at home, but I don't think we can rely on him down under. Overton I have never understood as part of the set up, just seems like a bit of a trundler to me. Suppose we have to hope Cook or Tongue really turn up against India.

Tongue is a cracking bowler & Bashir is a wicket taker. Atkinson a big loss but hopefully it’ll only be one test.

Carse has been superb last 12 months too.

A lot riding on Archer and Wood recovering if we want any pace for the Ashes.

I think putting Jimmy out to pasture will bite us. Best exponent of swing bowling in the world. Still walks into an Engalnd team for me. I get building for the future but our bowling attack is light weight and whilst plenty in the bathing line up a tendency to go too Baz esp in the counter can result in wickets tumbling.

Let's hope Stokes is able to bowl

At home in English conditions with a swinging Dukes ball against an India side going through transition in the top order, we have a decent chance.

What I don't see is how this bowling attack will be able to perform on Australian pitches with the Kookaburra ball over the winter.

Lacks real pace, and I don't see Wood or Archer staying fit for enough Ashes matches to compensate that.

Yep, I like the look of Tongue too. Had to change his action slightly due to injury, but he’s got raw pace and hits the bat hard, ala Flintoff. Cook needs a run in the England side he’s bowled brilliantly for Essex over recent seasons it’s about time he’s given his chance. When Bashir gets his length right, he looks a decent spin bowler gets drift and flight, a bit like Nathan Lyon, just needs to learn his craft……on the international stage!! Carse is another I like the look of, just needs to stay fit.

In fact, I’ve just agreed with all your points Reuser, I should’ve just given you an uppie!! :)

Jamie Overton is a better option than his brother. He’s a big lad, though he’s not express pace, he’ll be able to get bounce on the Aussie pitches. He’s also a very decent lower order batsmen.

I would start with Cook, Carse, Potts, with Stokes. Tongue has a very odd technique, struggled to get anywhere close to 90mph, & will break down. Archer is finished in Test Cricket. Woody out for the whole season & likely finished. Quite what Overton is doing there is beyond me!
Woakes is not a guy to be relying upon particularly overseas.

Cook struggles to get above 80mph & he looked County standard against Zimbabwe.
I think our bowling will really struggle down under. A fit Archer would be a great addition but can anyone see him being fit enough to play more than a couple of Tests.
Mark Wood is 35 & it's even harder to see him having a big impact on the next Ashes.
Obviously we should concentrate on the India series but success on English pitches might not be a good guide to doing well in Oz.

He doesn’t have to bowl 80mph+, he needs to offer variety. He does that with his felt arm and swing bowling. Let’s factor in Cook might have been nervous in his First Test, he needs to be given time to adjust to the step up. Let’s be fair, plenty of our batsmen have been given countless opportunities. After watching Cook bowl for Essex give the boy a chance, he’s waited long enough.

Cook deserves a run, he's been brilliant in county cricket and shown he can bowl with the kookaburra ball. Carse and Atkinson are a bit similar but unlike Cook they offer something with the bat. The spinner is the issue for me. I'm not sure we have one good enough. Bashir's angle all look wrong, pushing the ball leg side rather than the drift and dip of a Swann or Lyon. It means more pressure on the inexperienced seamers. I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Bethell is in the Mo Ali role at 7/8 as the spinner, supported by Root.

Glenn McGrath?! He wasn’t express pace perhaps early 80s, but his line and length were impeccable.

Philander, Mohammed Asif, Bhuvi Kumar, Mo Abbas are probably the most recent guys who've had excellent to good careers bowling predominantly in the upper 70s. Philander especially was also excellent in Australia.

Tim Southee, Jason Holder, Vernon Philiander, you could also say Anderson and Broad in later years too

Cook was averaging 75 in the last test and never touched 80.
